Young, Single and Looking ...

Oct 09 '01

The Bottom Line A list of essentials for the beginners kitchen.

Young, single and looking to stock a brand new kitchen.

My daddy always told me, “Buy tools somewhere in the middle price range, not cheap but not too expensive, yup right around the middle and you will be okay.” Of course, he was referring to shop tools and we are looking at kitchen tools, but his advice has been very helpful in many purchase choices of my adult life. This includes shopping for kitchen tools and all the bells and whistles that make kitchens functional and fun places to cook and enjoy eating.

If you are single, you probably eat out a lot, with just a few essential kitchen tools and simple ingredients you can cook healthy meals that are more nutritious and easier on your budget. This means more money for the fun stuff like movies, dates and all around partying. So lets get down to business here, what does a kitchen need to work successfully with its owner.

Listed below is the bare bones kitchen, my opinion of course ….

1. ten inch non-stick skillet
2. one and two quart sauce pans with lids. ( Keeping lids on boiling pots keeps the mess down to a minimum.)
3. Five quart Dutch Oven with lid.
4. Eight inch chef knife ( get high quality it saves time and money in the long run, buy a Henkel at your local Department store)
5. 3 inch paring knife ( again buy high quality)
6. whet stone or sharpening steel for sharpening knives ( I sharpen my knives every time I use them)
7. Large Cutting Board ( plastic or wood)
8. wooden spoons of various sizes
9. slotted spoon
10. ladle
11. plastic spatula ( for the non-stick skillet)
12. rubber spatula ( for scraping out bowls and measuring cups)
13. tongs
14. set of measuring spoons and cups
15. 2 cup glass measuring cup
16. set of mixing bowls ( at least 3, I prefer glass)
17. grater ( You may know this as a cheese grater)
18. baking or roaster pan
19. large strainer ( also known as a colander)
20. can opener ( buy a manual, this way you can still eat when there power goes out)
21. corkscrew and bottle opener
22. oven mitts and trivets ( for the hot stuff)
23. kitchen shears ( really handy for cutting open food packaging)
24. microwave and freezer safe storage containers ( you can buy these in a box of 36 at Costco for about $12.00 the last time I checked)
25. Last but not least, the beloved frozen pizza pan, which can be used for pizza, cookies, biscuits, garlic bread and the list goes on and on my friend.)

Well, of course you will need a cook book if you are truly a beginner, I recommend Fanny Farmer or the Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook.

* Check out some of the great reviews on these cook books, it is sure to help you make a decision on which book would be best for your needs.

With your kitchen stocked and cook book in hand you will be well on your way to cooking healthy, happy home made meals. You may even find enough talent to cook for your parents or that special someone in your life.

God Bless and Happy Reading
