My Favorite Adventure MoviesOct 11 '01 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line These are my favorite adventure films, and I hope my list contains something for everyone. Warning: Action and Adventure movies always seem to be lumped together, but to me, they are actually two different animals. This list includes my favorite Adventure movies. Some of them have a fair amount of action in them, and some do not. 10. JAWS (1975, Rated PG) Is there anyone in America who hasn't seen this movie? A great movie about a small, eastern beach resort menaced by a gigantic, man-eating shark. Once you have seen it, it has a way of popping up in your mind every time you go swimming in the ocean. 9. THE THREE MUSKETEERS (1993, Rated PG) There are many movies about the Three Musketeers, but this is my favorite. Set in 18th century France, it tells the story of a young country boy who wishes only to be a Musketeer, one of the King's elite guards. He travels to the city to fulfill his dream, and joins up with three Musketeers as they try to save the young King and his Queen from a scheming cardinal and his henchmen. 8. THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL (1934, Not Rated) Another story that has been told several times by Hollywood. My favorite is this old black and white version starring Leslie Howard as the man who lives two lives. By day, he appears to be nothing but a foolish English dandy. By night, he is the Pimpernel, a cunning master of disguise who rescues French aristocrats from the guillotine. 7. FORCE TEN FROM NAVARONE (1978, Rated PG) This movie tells the story of an elite Allied team dropped behind Nazi lines during WWII. While they have been told their mission is to bomb a bridge giving the Germans access over a river, it turns out that is only half their task. Taking out the bridge might very well be the easy half of the mission. 6. THE MUMMY (1999, Rated PG-13) While only one of many mummy movies, this is my favorite because it is so fun and includes quite a bit of humor. An American adventurer and soldier of fortune teams with a flaky Egyptian scholar and her cowardly brother to try and stop an ancient mummy from returning to life and bringing the world to an end. 5. HATARI (1962, Not Rated) This is a great story about a game ranch in Africa where they trap wild animals for zoos in Europe and America. I like it because it has beautiful scenery and a great soundtrack by Henry Mancini. 4. GLADIATOR (2000, Rated R) This epic picture tells the story of a Roman general who escapes his would-be executioners only to wind up a slave. Driven by his desire for revenge, he becomes a gladiator so he can get close to the man who ordered the deaths of his wife and child, and ends up saving Rome in the bargain. 3. THE 13TH WARRIOR (1999, Rated R) Based on the book, "The Eaters of the Dead" by Michael Crichton, this tells the story of a bookish Muslim diplomat during the dark ages. Banished from home for loving the wrong woman, he finds himself joining up with a band of Scandinavian warriors as they try to defeat a very scary foe. This book and movie are particularly interesting to me because the Arab is based on a historical person, Ibn Fadlan, who traveled extensively and wrote in detail about his travels. He recorded one of the only accounts of a Viking burial. 2. THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS (1996, Rated R) Based on real events, this film tells the story of an Irish engineer who travels to Africa to build a railway bridge over a river. When he arrives in Africa, he finds himself not only dealing with the logistics of bridge-building, but also trying to do something about the man-eating lions preying on his building crew. 1. THE INDIANA JONES MOVIES Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981, Rated PG) Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984, Rated PG) Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989, Rated PG-13) I know, that's actually three movies, but how can you pick one above the others? In my opinion, these are all great movies. In the unlikely event that someone out there has never heard of them, let me just say that these movies chronicle the adventures of Indiana Jones, archeologist and adventurer. After all these years, I still think these are the best adventure films ever made. |
