The Bottom Line Knee-slapping, toe-tapping tunes fun and funky tunes for all. Fantastic music from an up and coming star, Laurie Berkner. Get "Victor Vito" Now!
In my quest to continue to get parents, friends, grandparents and the general public to buy MUSIC for the children in their lives, I bring you yet another FANTASTIC children’s music CD: (drum roll: TAHDAH…) Victor Vito by Laurie Berkner! Definitely a contender for one of The Best Children’s Music Albums Of 2000 and a major performer in the world of children's music. Oh Victor Vito is so much fun your kids will wish he lived down the street (for play dates) and you will thank me for finding this amazing recording for your growing collection. Remember, the holiday season is just around the corner. We are already seeing lots of decorations and it isn’t even past Halloween. This 50 minute CD contains 22 knee-slapping, toe-tapping hits that your children will be singing along with in no time at all. The only downside you wonder? You will too – be singing that is – and maybe even toe-tapping.. And this is bad if your car has rear-tinted windows and the other drivers only see you bopping along without realizing that you have a bunch of kids in the backseat who are bopping too. So you look a little freaky, not a biggie, right? The play list is: 1. Victor Vito 2. Bottle Caps 3. Moon Moon Moon 4. Froggie Went A-Courtin' 5. I'm Not Perfect 6. The Toy Museum 7. O Susannah 8. BOOTS 9. Oleanna 10. The Crabs 11. Sneaks 12. The Goldfish 13. Zodiac 14. Trucks 15. Fruit Salad Salsa 16. The Story of My Feelings 17. I Feel Crazy So I Jump in the Soup 18. Shakin' Down the Sugar 19. Googleheads 20. Tingolayo 21. White Coral Bells 22. Goodnight Ok you want me to get to the heart of the matter already (honest I am trying). Well when was the last time you popped in a CD and heard lyrics like this: "Victor Vito and Freddie Vasco Ate a burrito with Tabasco They put it on their rice They put it on their beans On their rutabagas And on their collard greens” How cool does that sound? Trust me, it is even better with a bass, percussion and backup vocals. And as silly as it may sound, Laurie claims the inspiration was switching from her old accountant Fred to her new accountant Victor. Who knew? Want to hear for yourself. Check out "Victor Vito” and a couple of other songs at Barnes and Noble.com’s website. To listen to song samples you'll need a RealAudio Player. http://music.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?ean=695842340324 Laurie Berkner gets children. She really knows how to hook up with kids on an accessible level – for them. She seems to have a four-year-old living inside her who can get down and get funky with the preschool set. Maybe it comes from her days as a preschool teacher, maybe she just connects. I was lucky enough to hear and see her in concert in New York and it was a show to be remembered. The Gabster could not stay in her seat, the music was making her get up and boogie. Her lyrics are fresh and original and so catchy that you will be singing along in no time. When I switched CDs in The Hubby’s car from "Jim Gill Sings the Sneezing Song and Other Contagious Tunes" (shameless plug inserted – see my review - http://www.vbfc.epinions.com/content_1901109380) to “Victor Vito” by Laurie Berkner I thought the troops might revolt. After all, we always sing “Old Sock Stew”, “I Took A Bath In A Washing Machine” and “Alabama, Mississippi” on the way to school. What was this Victor eating burritos nonsense at 8:30 in the morning? Well call me Mama (NOT) and blow me over – two days later even little JB could clap her hands to “Fruit Salad Salsa” and yell again, again. Oh “Fruit Salad Salsa”, great song! Here come the mangos with one hand out And here come the apples with one hand out And here come the papayas with one hand out All for the fruit salad salsa. Add a little bit of a Latin beat and you should be ready to shake, shimmy and eat. My most favorite song to sing TO The Gabster and JB is “I’m Not Perfect”. I figure the subtle message might just get through to them one of these days. “I’m not perfect, no I’m not I’m not perfect but I’ve got what I’ve got I do my very best, I do my very best I do my very best each day But I’m not perfect And I hope you like me that way” I’d keep typing lyrics, but I’m not sure everyone out there wants to read them all. It is much more fun to hear them. Check out Laurie’s web site at http://www.twotomatoes.com - Two Tomatoes is the record company that Laurie formed to promote her music. The web site has information about Laurie, her CDs, her concert schedule (she is all over the country) and purchasing stuff. To order by phone with a credit card, call the Round-Up Mail Order Hotline at 800-768-6337 (800-ROUNDER). Laurie has two other albums (I am dating myself here, but that’s how I think of music even if it no longer comes on vinyl) that are great, “Whaddaya Think Of That?”(1997) and “Buzz Buzz,” (1998) and now there is even a video, “Laurie Berkner's Video Songbook” , released just this past month. I am anxiously awaiting my copy (hint, hint Grandmama B) so Laurie can sing and dance at our house all day long. In the New York area, word of mouth and the “mommy network” has made “Victor Vito” pretty well known. Being featured on national TV this summer did not hurt either. NBC's Today Show previewed Laurie’s new video, “Laurie Berkner's Video Songbook” and Laurie performed live on the program in July 2001. I wonder if Katie Couric is a fan?? Laurie has also appeared at the White House Easter Egg Roll, Toronto's MILK International Children's Festival of the Arts, Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music and with Pete Seeger at the Ethical Culture Society in New York. Still not convinced. What does VBFC know about music you think? Well, take two musicians’ recommendations. Both Madonna and Sting had Laurie Berkner perform at their kids’ birthday parties. Berkner sang at little Lourdes’ 3rd bash in London and of course, Sting’s little boy GC (Giacomo) was there and he had to have Berkner for his big do when he turned 4. While I can’t guarantee you can book Laurie for an event at your house, for about $10 bucks you can pop her in the CD player and say you had the same entertainment as Madonna. I highly recommend “Victor Vito” for any family music collection. It is lots of fun and filled with great tunes. Others singing “Victor Vito” and Laurie Berkner’s praises include: The Children's Music Web which awarded “Victor Vito” the CD "Best Recording for Toddlers," and the disc's song "The Goldfish" "Best Song For Young Children." “Victor Vito” CD also received a Parent's Guide To Children's Media Award and “Victor Vito" was chosen by Publisher's Weekly as one of their top five children's albums of 1999. So if you want to hear playful songs, filled with rhyme, family friendly lyrics, a lot of good humor and great guitar playing (by Laurie) “Victor Vito” is the CD for you. Otherwise, try one of those canned Disney tapes. While The Gabster loves some of them, they sure do grate on my nerves and ears after ten minutes. “Victor Vito” is way easier on the ears, the nerves and the soul. Try some today! |
