The Pull Apart Bible

Written: May 14 '01
The Bottom Line: It would have been a wonderful book if it didn’t fall apart.

My daughter received the Baby’s First Bible as a gift at one of our baby showers. The book is published by Reader’s Digest Children’s Books and illustrations are by Colin and Moira MacLean. The book has several bible stories written for ages newborn through toddlers. The book has a plastic clasp to hold the pages shut and there is a matching handle for carrying the Baby’s First Bible off to Sunday School.

The book itself is 8 inches tall and about 7 inches wide. It has a hard cover and there are 20 heavy, “board book” pages. The cover and first two pages have peek-a-boo holes in them so the illustrations of the next pages can be seen. Some of the stories are written in simple, easy rhymes and some are written in prose.

The stories mentioned in Baby’s First Bible are: What God Made, Noah’s Ark, Baby Moses, David the Shepherd, Daniel, Baby Jesus, Jesus at the Temple, Zacchaeus, Jesus Stops a Storm, and Jesus is Alive! There are also a few pages interspersed through the book that just have scripture on them. The scriptures included are Deuteronomy 6:5, Psalm 47:1, and Mark 10:14. All scriptures are quoted from the International Children’s Bible, New Century Version.

The illustrations are bright and colorful. They are cartoon type drawings. There are lots of extra things to look at on each page. There are a lot of animals on each page, especially dogs, cats, & birds. This gives extra entertainment for children. There are also extra activity ideas on most of the pages. For example, with the story about David the Shepherd, at the bottom of the page they suggest this activity: “Be a little lamb. Crawl around on your hands and knees. Pretend to nibble on some sweet green grass.”

However, after a few short months of enjoying this cute book, the cover ripped completely off. It is not as if this book saw any more use than any other of my daughter’s books. And she is not particularly hard on her books. None of her other books show any significant damage. I believe that the hard cover and the board pages just do not mix well. Most board books have a cover made of the same material as the pages. This seems to work better than adding a hard cover.
