You have to get this one Fly Away Home. It should be a classic! You and your child will love it!
I was out shopping in my favorite discount find store, Value City, with my 3 year old son. I'm not one of those parents whom buy gifts for no reason for my children while shopping. I saw this stack of "Fly Away Home" pop-up books. Remarkable there was over 25 of them sitting on a shelf seemingly thrown there but, more remarkably marked for only $1.50 each (the suggested retail says $12.99)!
Now here's where I hear my husband (like the little devil )in the back of my head saying "you didn't save us a dime no matter how cheap it was", "do we really need this", "another book to add to our childrens ever growing library", yadda, yadda, yadda. Then I hear the other voice(I'm not sure whose this one is) saying "it looks so cute", "Robert loves pop up books and he's destroyed most of them", "come on it's only $1.50 and he's being so good today", "do you really need it?", "just open it and take a peek".
Those voices have come and gone so many times. Now it's time to get rational. The cover is beautifully done and bright and cheerful for not only myself, but my three year old. Whose child doesn't just love pop up books? and most of ours are ripped apart. It's so eye catching, I cave in and not only buy one but, I buy 5 of them (you never know when you can use an extra present and for $1.50 pop up book?). Am I rational? I can always return them...
Well I have to say this was one of the BEST finds that I've found in a long time. I wish I bought all 25 of them! Everyone whom I gave this to absolutely loves it. It's my sons favorite book! I went back to get more and of course it is sold out! I'll be paying full retail for copies for birthday gifts in the future.
I had never heard of this book nor author, but I will be looking for more from them.
The book is titled "Fly Away Home" by Jane Edgecombe and Stuart Martin. It is a hardcover pop-up book approximately 10"x12". The cover is green with a cute, lively, colorful scene of a ladybug, ants and a dragonfly with smiling animated faces in a cozy, comfortable forest environment. Published by Publishing International. Copywrite from The Book Company Publishing Pty Limited 2002. There are 12 sturdy pages with about 12 lines of large text per page, just long enough to keep your childs attention span. There is either a pop up picture or a pop up to do on every page.
The story starts with the famous jump roping song/nursery rhyme "Ladybird, Ladybird, fly away home, your house is on fire, your children are flown...........it goes on to be a very cute story of what happens to the ladybug who overhears the child singing this song and has to go home to her family. The story is 12 pages long with about 12 lines of large text per page. It is perfect for my son.
My 3 year old son loved it. My 4 year old niece reads it every day. My friends all are out looking for it because we gave it as part of a birthday gift and that child brought it to nursery school for Read Across America week. the teacher wanted a copy and all the kids are asking their parents to get them one too. It is really great. Even my 8 year old son (not a lover of reading) loves to read this one to his younger brother.
Not only is the story line adorable but, the drawings are spectacular. There are bright, animated bugs and insects whom fill every page. The writing is large and easy to read for parents and the beginner readers. Pop ups are very cute and appear to jump out of the pages. There are a couple of things for the children to do including moving a tab to pull the ladybug up and to get her on her way.
The pages, pop ups and tabs are very durable. So far not a single tear or rip in this book and that's a record for my son especially since this is one of his favorite all time books. I can honestly tell you we read this at least 4 times a week and it's three months old! He reads it to himself now too.
You have got to get this one and please let me know if your child (and you) loved it as much as we did! I will be shocked if anyone has anything to say but positive things on this book. Come on click on the link and give it a try. When mine is worn, I'll be paying full retail to get another copy! If only I saved an extra copy.
Highly Recommended for infants to age 6!
Warning there are other childrens books with the same title so if you do purchase it, make sure it is the one by Jane Edgecombe or Stuart Martin (note I have a copy with Stuart Martin as the 2nd name but, I see on the link to purchase with the same cover with the name Dudley Mosely next to Jane Edgecombe). If you are looking try all the names, it'll be worth the effort.
