| gauldd01's Full Review: Bonica Handy Snapper 35mm Point and Shoot Camera |
The Bonica Handy Snapper Underwater Camera is a good place to start for beginners. At $85 it is cost-effective and affordable. The camera housing is colorful and will attract tropical fish (as it did for me in Cozumel, which, btw, is the BEST place in the world to go diving.)
The open-open close mechanism of the housing is simple and seals with O-rings to prevent water leakage. The view-finder is large and can be used with masks. The "external" viewfinder works well too but obviously is not as accurate.
One complaint I had about this camera is that it is really just a $5.00 camera in an $85 underwater case. The camera is flimsy, plastic, and fragile. Loading the film isnt easy and film advance is manual only. When you are underwater, it is very hard to tell if you have advance the film properly. Additionally, the flash didnt always go off which meant that the picture was a misty grey or black square.
The pictures that came out well were absolutely superb, but on a 36 roll expect only 50% to turn out well. You will also want to buy a click to sercure the camera to you while you are in the water. During my last trip, while taking a picture the camera suddenly disappeared because of a sudden current. It is bouyant and it rose to the surface very quickly. Being 40 feet underwater, all I could do was watch it be carried away by strong surface currents.
While I had it, I loved it. But now that it is lost, I wont buy another. I will look into the other type of underwater cameras. I buy the Canon Underwater Elph and then realized to my disappointment that it was only submersible to 15ft. More of a pool camera than anything else. So if you were thinking of buying the Canon Underwater Elph for anything but pool or surface use, then dont.
