Granny Feelgoods: Feelsgood for a Business Lunch and Granny will Comfort you too!

Oct 13 '01

The Bottom Line located in the hub of downtown Miami.. A perfect place for a business lunch....A pleasure lunch...A healthy lunch, whatever suits your needs or taste buds...

Granny Feelgoods Natural food Restaurant, You don't have to be a vegetarian to eat there!

I've been "somewhat" of a vegetarian for many years but not as strict as I suppose I could be, or others truly are. I will eat chicken and fish and I like to vary my menu and eat healthy as much as possible. Lot's of raw vegetables and fruits, whole grains and soy protein products are the mainstay of my diet, so it was a delight to discover the newest location of the wonderful, family owned, Granny Feelgoods Natural Foods Restaurant and Marketplace in downtown Miami.

I can't imagine why it's not listed in the Miami listings of places to eat here in epinions, since it's been in business in that area for over 25 years in various locations in the downtown Miami area. A favorite of many who work nearby it's been the site of many business lunches for as many years as they have been serving the delicious and healthy food that they are so popular for. Their reasonable prices don't hurt either!!

The cross section of people who eat here are as varied as are the reasons for it's popularity among those that frequent there. Having a birthday? On any given day you will hear the sounds of a "Happy Birthday" being sung at one table or another as office gatherings take place at one of the bigger tables to celebrate the happy day with some co-workers extending a birthday day wish to another...Whole Carrot cakes are always on hand for just such an occasion. Or, birthday cakes of different varieties can be ordered ahead of time.

Located near the Courthouse, The Metro Center, The County Offices, The Federal Building and many other downtown office complexes as well as being on the main street of Downtown Miami's Flagler Street, you can see why this is the perfect place for a business lunch as well as any other reason for enjoying a good healthy meal on any day of the week.

You don't have to be a vegetarian to visit there and enjoy the food. Only the freshest healthiest foodstuffs are offered, with fruits and vegetables selected daily and organically grown produce used whenever available. The menu selections and preparation methods emphasize low-fat, low cholesterol and low sodium choices. All this, without forgoing flavor and always pleasing your taste buds.

Looking for comfort foods during these trying times? A few recently added selections to the menu should take care of those needs....Turkey meat loaf and mashed potatoes, half a roasted chicken with a whole baked sweet potato are specials of the day found there very often. Served daily are Turkey burgers with all the accoutrements, and of course, a great soy veggie burger is always available with or without mushrooms served under the melted cheese of your choice. Prices for these dishes range in $4.50 to $8.95 area depending on what you select as toppings.

In the mornings you can get the very best soy pancakes served with fresh fruit and warm maple syrup from Vermont, along with omelets of your choice, whether with real eggs, egg whites or eggbeaters, filled with many varieties of goodies to fill you up until it's time for lunch... It's up to you......... The pancakes are $4.95 plain and a $1.00 extra topped with fresh fruit..The omelets start at $2.95.

The regular lunch menu has such many varied selections. Do you love chicken? Gourmet chicken main courses are prepared in quite a few ways....Such as, Parmesan, served with pasta, Teriyaki with brown rice and vegetables and there is even a jerk chicken dish that is a favorite with the regulars or, chicken just grilled, served with basmati rice prepared with currents, and of course, fresh, steamed vegetables served with most of the entrees......... Priced from $6.95 to $7.95

In the mood for fish? Then try one of the specials, plucked daily from the sea, such as seared tuna, with Asian styled vegetables, or grilled snapper, grouper or mahi mahi (dolphin) served with rice and veges....These are market priced. There is also a grilled jumbo shrimp stir fry and grilled shrimp served over pasta............at $11.50 each..

There are many different ways and styles of cooking in which they prepare tofu and other soy-based products besides the vege burgers.. my favorite is the vegetarian paella.... That is, when it's one of the daily specials.

Craving something Italian? The pasta specialties are also very popular and delicious, one of my favorites is the Spinach lasagna, filled with a delicious Florentine mushroom mixture, and a blend of low fat ricotta and mozzarella cheeses....At $6.95 this is truly a bargain served with a salad and dressing of your choice.. my favorite dressing along with many other customers is the homemade miso dressing with just the right blend of sweet and tangy flavors.
There is also a Pasta Marinara which is the pasta of the day topped with homemade marinara sauce, fresh basil and fresh grated Parmesan cheese.....$6.95 and, for only $2 more you can have it topped with grilled chicken strips or tofu. Another great pasta dish is their Mushroom Ravioli, also served with fresh basil and Parmesan cheese........$6.95

The steaming, hot baked potato specialties of the house have long been favorites with the regular customers....Potato Florentine, with the same topping mentioned above as in the lasagna, the Potato Mayflower, filled with sliced turkey breast, mushrooms, lite sour cream and topped with melted cheddar jack cheese and a lite garlic sauce and the Potato Mexicali filled with vegetarian style refried beans, cheddar jack cheese and topped with guacamole, salsa, scallions, jalapeno peppers, lite sour cream and surrounded with crisp nacho chips....This is not for the faint of heart or those on a diet... Priced at $5.95 each, these truly are a bargain....You can also get a plain, jumbo baked potato served with butter or sour cream and a side salad with your choice of dressing for only $4.50.

For a taste of Mexico there are two more of my favorites menu items, nachos supreme, prepared with vegetarian refried beans , homemade guacamole, light sour cream, topped with melted chedder, and an incredible chimichanga with the same toppings, both at $6.50. For $2.00 extra you can get these topped also with chicken strips or tofu for the heartier eater...

The salad selection is also varied, with many different kinds of green or mixed vegetable salads. For instance, Caesar, with your choice of chicken, shrimp or tofu on top, Hi Protein salad with cottage cheese, nuts and raisins, Greek salad with feta cheese, the raw vegetable salad served with a variety of toppings and, the most popular, Fresh Fruit Salad, the freshest of fruits, depending on the season, served with frozen yogurt or cottage cheese topped with assorted nuts and raisons.... Priced from $2.95 for the smallest to $6.50 with assorted toppings at $2.00 extra. These are all served with fresh homemade dressings.

Now, I can't forget the creative sandwiches, there are many different types to choose from, including white meat tuna with dill, or chicken salad with chopped apples and raisins with a hint of cinnamon, (these are also available scooped on top of the vegetable salads). There is also a sliced turkey breast sandwich with or without melted or cold cheese, an avocado and cheese sandwich, a grilled chicken breast or grilled fish sandwich and my favorite, tuna melt..... All served on your choice of freshly baked breads or pita. Priced from $4.95 to $6.50. On occasion, they feature wonderful wraps of assorted varieties and fillings as a daily special.

And the soups!! I must not forget the soups, thick and hearty, freshly made everyday are old fashioned and robust, prepared from the finest ingredients and fill you up with a heavenly, old country kitchen glow. Soups like luscious lentil, split pea, navy bean, vegetable noodle or just plain vegetable which is anything but plain with a hint of cilantro and other delicious spices. The newest addition to the soup menu is a nondairy, thick, creamed carrot soup ...... You would think the main ingredient besides carrots was heavy cream but the fact that there is no cream is almost hard to believe........These are priced at $2.95 for a cup and $3.95 for a bowl.

Now, for the piece de resistance, the desserts! They are to drool over. I particularly love the Carrot Cake, with cream cheese frosting and the Apple,Walnut Custard Pie, always a diet breaker. On any given day there are daily special desserts too, sometimes an incredible pie, maybe Key Lime or a low fat cheese cake, sometimes, homemade cookies. There are always two different flavors of frozen yogurt, and with their new cappuccino machine, you have your choice of many different kinds of coffee. They will even mix up an egg cream in honor of the New Yorkers who just have to have one. Ask for a dollop of vanilla or chocolate yogurt thrown in and you have a black and white or chocolate ice cream soda.

Only open during the day for breakfast and lunch, there may be a short line to get into Grannies at the noon hour but it certainly is worth the wait or, go there just after all the judges, lawyers and other downtowners leave to head back to their offices or places of business.

No problem if you are a vegen, they have varied selections of tofu, soy, vegetable and rice dishes available also.

Smoothies and assorted other fresh vegetable and fruit juices like carrot, celery, beet , orange and many more are all available in any combination made to order while you wait....These are served all day.

Even if you can't leave your office you can order anything on the menu to be delivered, picked up for lunch or to take home for dinner. They will also cater a breakfast or lunch for as many as you wish with a few days notice.

The marketplace, a small area reserved for retail sales is a good selection of the best quality vitamins, herbs and protein powders, natural food products, nutrition bars and snacks, along with freshly made sandwiches and salads ready to pick up for your convenience. Cold refreshing drinks are always available also.

The owner, a really personable gentleman, will bend over backwards to handle any and all of your special dietary needs.

They are open Monday-Friday, 7:00 Am for the scrumptious breakfasts to start your day, and close at 4:00 PM.

So, I hope the next time you are in the downtown Miami area and looking for a unique, fast food, breakfast and in the need of a business lunch you will give Grannies a try. Or, if you decide to travel to Miami whether for business or pleasure and are in the neighborhood, tourists are very welcome too..
