Wow! I knew they were pretty fanatic over there in Japan in regards to Dragon Quest, but adopting the spell names into their dictionary, thats insane... Just imagine something like that in the USA happening with Final Fantasy -Thundaga, Esuna, NulIce?? haha!!- jeez...
Thanks for telling me that, but I should expect that from Japan with their burger making games and dating simulators -you'd think that'd keep the population down wouldn't ya?-.

..in Japan, Dragon Quest is still bigger than Final Fantasy could ever dream of being. It's so deeply embedded in their culture, it's become the standard that they measure all other RPGs against. They've inducted names of DQ spells into their official language. Dragon Quest VII shipped 3 million units in Japan in it's first 3 days of release.
Outside of Japan though... you ain't kidding. Only a couple hundred thousand copies sold in the US. :(

Yeah, most definately, Dragon Quest was like Japans' answer to Final Fantasy. Outside of Japan, I wouldn't cite Dragon Quest to be anywhere near as big as it FF cousin, but like you said, it was gigantic in Japan, -but I sure as hell didn't know about that skipping school thing, thats crazy!!-.
So I see what ya mean by that, and hopefully you know what I mean by that -if ya know what I mean...phew-.
Thanks for the comment.

Yeah, for me, it's pretty darn close between those two games, but VIII was my first RPG experience so it means a bit more to me...
And yes, the junction system was pretty good, eh? Not as confusing as some folk make out!
Cheers for the comment!

"there were plenty of classic RPGs prior to Final Fantasy VII, but they werent really accepted by the majority of the gaming audience"
..when Dragon Quest III was released for the Super Famicom in Japan in 1988, people skipped school to buy it and fights broke out over the cartridges. Because of that, they had to make an actual law to only release Dragon Quest games on weekends.
I wouldn't go so far as to say RPGs weren't accepted by the majority of the gaming audience, but there's no doubt FF7 was a jump ahead. Nice review.

Yeah, I'd have to cite this as my absolute favorite Final Fantasy ever, although X does put up a good fight. Sometimes I guess it depends on what time in your life you play it, and whether or not you can relate to somebody like Squall. Which I know I sure can.
The Junction system is just totally brilliant. All those "weird" spells like Triple and Aura have such unpredictable effects. I always liked to put 100 Triples on my Speed, talk about fun as hell. Oh yeah, and I HATE when I forget to draw the GF from a boss!
Dangit, now you've got me all wanting to play it again, but I left it at my sister's place.
