The Bottom Line A fun, easy craft that a young child can help with. Great gift idea for those who can't afford much and something that the grandparents will love!
With Christmas only a few short months away, we've been trying to come up with some ideas for Christmas gifts that will go easy on the budget and that my three year old daughter can have a hand in. We've given pictures of the kid/family before, but wanted to do something a little more personal this time. So we're making our own picture frames to go with the pictures! What you'll need: *Hard cardboard (using boards for under decorative cakes work well -- this is what we used) *Assorted yarns (whatever color you want -- since ours are going to be for Christmas we're using red, green and white. I recommend using a lighter weight yarn) *Craft glue *Little trinkets *Felt Assembly: Cut out the size frame that you want. Our picture was a 4x6 inch photo, so we make the viewable field that large and added an inch on all four sides to decorate. The size of your trinkets/toys can help you determine how large the frame needs to be. Using craft glue (or a glue gun if you prefer and aren't doing this with young children), attach the end of a piece of yarn to one of the corners. Begin wrapping the yarn around the frame. You can change colors if you want, or do the whole frame in one color. If you are doing it with a young child, you might want to help even out the yarn distribution to make sure that it's not too thick in any places as this will effect how you work the end. Allow the glue to dry thoroughly. Once the glue is dry, cut out a solid piece of cardboard that is the size of the entire frame. Glue this on three sides of the frame, leaving one side open to slide in your picture when you're finished. You can either cut a notch in it to allow the picture to be propped up, or you can attach a hook later so you can hang it on a wall. You can cover the back with felt to cover up the cardboard (especially important if you used something like a pizza box!). Again wait for the glue to completely dry before going on. Once the frame is made, add the trinkets to it. You can find small toys and what have you at most craft stores. We tried to find things that reminded us of Christmas or were unique to the person who will be receiving the frame. Use your imagination here. You can even use personal things if you have stuff that's small enough. Whatever you can find that makes the frame something to be treasured. |
