The Bottom Line Whatever you decide about the filter type you'll use, invest in quality. You'll save in the long run.

A filter is a very important investment. It's one of the most costly equipments you'll need for an aquarium and it's perhaps the most important on keeping the biology in the aquarium stable.

The quality of filters varies as much as the price tag and the quality ones cost a lot more than the cheapest ones. Don't be fooled by the price tag, cheap filters eventually tend to get expensive since they break easily. You'll most likely have to buy a new filter soon and replace dead fish.

Good filters are also more silent (you'll know how much this matters when you've been listening to a loud filter in your living room day and night for weeks!) and easier to clean. If you have a good power filter it can take care of the aeration as well. Some models also come with a heater!

A word of warning here: stay away from undergravel filters, especially if you are a beginner! The basic idea of undergravel filters is great, but in most aquariums it gets clogged very easily and makes the gravel a good growing ground for poisonous bacteria. Once you have to glean the filter, you'll have to dig it up from the gravel. Not only that's a lot of work, but also aquariums should be disturbed as little as possible. Many plants stop growing for up to months if they are moved from their places.

Here in Europe the most well-respected filter maker is Eheim. I don't know if they sell those outside of Europe but I'm sure there are lots of other filters as well.
