The Bottom Line Iona take you to great heights soaring through beautiful songs and instrumental melodies. I have been to four Iona Concerts and seeing them live is indescribable go!!!

Iona are a Celtic Christian rock band. My friend Jonathan and his family took me to an Iona concert in Chislehurst on the 14th of July 2000. It was a most unusual venue for a band, a beautiful church and on our way, we met eating her dinner Joanne Hog the lead vocalist. Joanne greeted everyone that passed her by and before the concert I asked her to sign my 'Open Sky' album. She did and also got the other members who were getting ready, to autograph it. The band members were Frank Van Essen - Drums/Violin/ percussion and vocals. Troy Donockley - Uilleann pipes/ Low Whistles/Guitars/cittern and vocals. Joanne Hog - Lead vocals/Keyboard/Acoustic Guitar. Phil Baker - Basses/fretted and fretless. Dave Bainbridge - Keyboards and guitars.

The first half of the concert they performed all of their new album 'Open Sky' with tracks like 'Wave After Wave' and 'Hinba'. The lighting gave a celtic feel changing from dark blue to lush green. There was such an ambience. In the early evening the stained glass windows shone beautiful colours into the church. Joanne commented 'While I was singing I could see a beautiful stained glass window at the back and it was most inspiring' Franks violin playing of 'A Million Stars' gave a deeply moving tilt to the evening, while Joanne swayed and made jestures to reflect each song. Joanne as the lead vocalist gave a powerful but at the same time sensitive edge letting her voice glide to the back of the lofty church.

Next was an interval and the second part of the performance had all the favorite Iona songs and melodies, including tracks 'Today', 'Treasure', 'The Island', 'Revelation', Flight of the Wild Goose' Chi Rho and many more. The church had great acoustics and the music was so exciting it drove a lot of the audience into the aisles dancing furiously to the music. Troy gave us a lot of his humour in the interval, describing how people pronounced 'Uilleann Pipes', but in the concert he triumphed effortlessly in playing them. Dave tilts backward and forward producing amazing atmostpheric sounds both on the keyboard and guitar, while Phil gave great undertones being an essential part of the harmony. There was such energy from the band.

Afterwards I met the band, they seemed like wonderful people with great visions!!!
Iona live is breathtaking and so different from the cds, that if you can it is definitely worth seeing them in concert.
