Ah, Dell. Never has a computer hardware company incited so much love and so much hate in the hearts of my friends and acquaintances. I happen to be one of the lovers, but I’ve known my share of the leavers. The line between the two can get blurry after your first trip to www.dell.com to purchase the Black M4640 High-Yield Cartridge for the 922 All-In-One printer.

Well, because it’s your only choice for the 922 AOI model - unless you want to order regular capacity black cartridges from Dell continually. Dell is notorious for keeping their customers coming back to their website for more, and you pretty much will be forced to purchase this cartridge from Dell.com. Purchasing the high yield cartridge and taking a pass on the regular capacity cartridge is your best move, making your visit to Dell.com worthwhile and saving you unnessary visits.

I would not count on finding this at your local Staples or Office Max, and because you have to wait for the cartridges to ship to you – you will want a cartridge that can run on ink fumes for a long time. Even though I’m thrilled that this cartridge can indeed run on “fumes” for months, I am a little annoyed that I have to call or go to the website and wait to get the cartridges shipped. These are the sorts of hassles that turn Dell lovers into Dell leavers. If I’m in a pinch, I really don’t want to have to worry about Dell’s “process.” I want to be able to buy a cartridge in my very own neighborhood that will allow me to print my document!

Of course, you should always have a back-up on hand. You should also always floss every day, recycle, and get your oil changed every three months or 3,000 miles – whichever comes first. Luckily, Dell’s software does detect when the cartridge is running low and allows you to see how many copies you have left to print so that you really know how far you can push it.

Thank You For Not Smearing
The cartridge prints smooth, rich lines from your first print to your last. The quality of the ink in this cartridge is truly extraordinary. I’ve used it on photo paper, regular 20 lb. paper and label sheets with great results. The cartridge works well with the software, and removing it from the belly of this gigantic printer is a clean and painless process.

I’m particularly pleased with the rate at which the ink dries. It dries quick enough so that it doesn’t smear when another sheet is printing on top of it, and doesn’t smudge easily. I love to read while en route somewhere or in the bath, and unless there is heavy rain or water droplets on the paper, the ink does not smudge.

It comes packaged in an airtight foil packaging and features the pull-off tape with illustrated instructions, making this cartridge accessible to people who speak various languages.

Value for the Dollar
I purchased the high-capacity black cartridge for $25.99 and the high-capacity color cartridge for $30.99. Different bundles are available at different rates on the website.

In comparison, the standard capacity cartridges are about $5 less, but yield only half as many pages as their higher capacity counterparts. You will get a far better value for your dollar with the high capacity cartridge.

I honestly can’t give you a firm number of pages I’ve printed with this cartridge, but I can tell you that it lasted me 1 full year in a household of four. This is the only printer in the home, and it does get moderate household use. The kids print their homework with it, and I often print receipts or word processing documents that are pretty text heavy.
