Would I invite that artist into my home for dinner? Maybe.

The Bottom Line In the end it is up to us to decide what we want to listen to and to buy or not to buy is the question.

I seem to remember this argument being made when I was young. What I do not remember is all the killing lyrics in our songs.

No, I am not a big fan of the music my children listen to and I am not ashamed to say so. I tried to monitor what they listened to and it just did not work. Kids are creative and will find a way around anything so I did the next best thing. I got them to think for themselves!

I ask my children "Would you like to introduce that artist to your grandmother?" If I get a no (little one) then it is a maybe...but if I get a NO then the kids don't get the CD. Another question is "Would you invite them home to super?" The same rule of thumb applies.

I believe very strongly in the freedom of speech. Having said that I sometimes find my self at a crossroads. How do I teach my children that it is wrong to kill or say really bad words when it is in the music? How do I tell an artist you can only do what I think you should do? I can "let my opinion be heard" by simply turning off the radio, turning off the tv or not buying the CD.

Should an artist consider their lyrics? Sure but they cannot control how people interpret their music. A love song for a couple may bring back fond memories but for someone else it may bring back heartache. How do we decide what a song does to us is determined by our life experiences.

Artists have a wonderful gift to create. If we tell them what to write and how to write it we stifle them. It is like putting a child in a room full of crayons and telling them to only use the brown or black crayon. How can they express themselves? They cannot. Let me see if I can figure this out a little more.

Country Music

Songs of heartache and love. Songs that never really come out and say we had sex or made love but it is insinuated strongly in some songs. Do we tell Faith Hill and Tim McGraw not to sing Let's Make Love anymore? I don't think so. They are one of the hottest couples in Country Music.

Rap Music

Now I do not know very much about Rap Music so we have that cleared up right away. I remember when it first came out and I did not like it at all. I just don't like someone talking through a song yet Rap is liked by many people. Well, since I don't really like it does that mean they have to stop writing it? Nope, don’t think so. I'll just ask the kids (well more like tell them) to turn their radios down and go back to my Reba.

Rock n' Roll

Oh yeah baby! Elvis rules! Mom always had Elvis on the record player or the radio. Talk about a controversial singer! He was banned from having his bottom half shown on television because he shook too much and it was considered vulgar! Oh yeah like I am going to tell Trace Atkins not to wiggle! I don’t see that happening!

Classical

I enjoy classical music SOMETIMES. Sometimes it is just too much to take in. You really need to be able to sit and devote all your attention to this music to get the whole feel for. I like to sit and lite a candle, get a glass of wine, close my eyes and just enjoy. Some people find it totally BORING. Does that mean that Beethoven should have his music burned. Not in this lifetime!

Jazz

What would New Orleans be with it? Just plain fun music! You can clean very very well to good jazz. I like jazz but my kids don't. They want to know what in the world I am listening to. Just ask any Cajun and they will tell you it is in the blood!

Blues

Not for me. To whiny at times but my husband loves Blues. Just let me change the channel. PLEASE!!

I believe in the end that the artist will get the message if we do or do not like the music.

Right now I am trying to understand why a group would call themselves Godsmack. I don’t like that at all so it won’t be in my home. My children are begging me to listen to the group. I get the line "Mom all the kids at school are listening to them" and I of course give the classic mom answer "Honey, that is nice but I am not their mom, I am yours".

Nuff said! Mom wins (for now anyway!)
