The Bottom Line Your child's costume does not need to be expensive to be fun.
With Halloween right around the corner, I thought I would give you a couple of quick and easy tips for making some really cute and fun costumes. Jack-o-Lantern: Have you child wear a black or green shirt and a pair of tights of the same color. Gather a flat piece of orange fabric or crepe paper at the top and bottom, cut arm holes and pin it together in the back. Then stuff crumpled newspaper inside to created the fullness. Pin some green paper pumpkin leafs in your child''s hair. Scarecrow:Glue as many colorful patches as you can on an old pair of pants. Stuff the cuffs of an old shirt and the cuffs of your pants with straw after you have had your child put them on. Make a mask by cutting a mouth hole and eye holes in a bag that you will put over your child's head. Paint a scarecrow face on the bag and then tie the bag loosely at their neck. Have them wear an old hat. Lady Bug: Have your child wear a black shirt and black tights. Paint tow large circles, cut from red paper or poster board, and then glue on some black spots. Staple some fabric straps to the two large red circles. (This will both hold them in place an on your child.) To finish the costume off, put black pipe cleaner feelers on a black headband. Ghost: This is a really quick costume. Just cut eye holes in an old white sheet or table clothe. Then use a black marker to outline the eyes. Flower: Have your child wear green clothing. Cut out a large flower from poster board, then paint it or color it. (Your child can help with this part.) Cut a hole in the center for their face. Staple some green paper leafs to a pair of mittens. Baby: Buy one of those sleepers with feet in the size that you child will need. Have them carry a teddybear and a baby bottle. (This is a great one if you have really run out of time and ideas.) Bunny You will need on of those sleepers with feet for this costume as well. Pin a cottonball tail to the back. Cut out a head band from construction paper and then staple on paper rabbit ears. Draw some whiskers on your child with an eyebrow pencil. Have them carry a basket and a carrot. Dinosaur: Your child will need to wear green or brown clothes for this one. Glue some white paper teeth around the mouth hole of a brown ski mask. Glue some of those plastic Easter eggs with centers cut from paper at each eye whole. (The eggs should be halved and you will need to make eye holes so that your child can see.) Have them wear a pair of gloves with paper claws glued to the fingers. Bubble Bath: This is probably best for a little girl as they will need to wear pink tights, shorts, and shirt. Just before you bring her out, blow up a whole bunch of pink balloons and pin the ends all over the shirt and shorts. Pillowcase Person: This is by far the most fun one for your child to make. Dig out your markers and draw a face on a pillowcase. You can use some yarn to add some hair if you want to. Staple a strip of heavy cardboard inside the closed end of the pillowcase. Cut out some eye holes. Then, stuff the sleeves of a large old shirt or sweatshirt and pin gloves to the ends. Button the neck around the child's waist. Little Red Riding Hood: Have your little girl wear her favorite party dress. Get a large square piece of red fabric and place it around her head. Tie it loosely around her neck with a beautiful red ribbon. Now, have your child carry a bunch of plastic or real flowers and a basket for her goodies. Robot: Have your child wear a dark shirt and tights. Get a large enough box to cover their body. Cut out a hole for their heads to stick through. Cut out a face hole in a smaller box. (This will be the one that they will actually wear on their heads.) You can either paint the box gray or cover it with foil. To detail your Robot you can glue on some nuts and bolts--or just let your imagination run wild. If you have run out of time to make a costume or do not want to go out and buy one---these are really some fun ideas to try. I hope these costumes tips will be of use to you. Your child can have fun helping you put them together and it will be time well spent with them. These are sure to be costumes which are made from love. Thanks Debbie |
