G85: Equally versatile in business or home
Written: May 15 '01
Pros:Output, speed, scanner & fax functions, versatility
Cons:Software, no manual feed, ink jet means high cost of ownership
The Bottom Line: Im very pleased with the output and function of the HP G85, and, despite its quirks, I wouldnt hesitate recommending it to anyone.
When our workhorse HP 6200C scanner decided to bite the dust, we started shopping for a replacement, and eventually decided on a multifunction machine to replace our fax machine as well as to have a more centrally-located printer in the house.
You can’t decide on a MFD (multifunction device) without first comparing the output between its competitors. For this we went to our local Office Depot, and found that the HP G85 offered far better output than comparable Xerox, Brother, and other machines by a wide margin.
The unit can be connected to the PC via the USB or parallel port. As in most cases, USB is noticeably faster in scanner operation, though printing is more or less unaffected with either. Copier and fax function works independently of the PC and does not require any of the above connections.
The unit’s output is speedy in normal mode and the output is more than adequate – “best” mode is not much better, though it takes far longer to print. A noticeable aspect of its operation is the near-silence of its printing – perfect for a noise-sensitive environment. The scanner offers vibrant output and the automatic document feeder works admirably.
The fax function is versatile and works flawlessly.
The software HP provides is severely “dumbed-down” – if you have any computer knowledge you’ll feel limited by the software. However, the software included with the upcoming Windows XP is far less flashy and equally functional and should be adequate for all users. Don’t get me wrong about the HP software – it does its job and it does it well – but it is almost too user friendly at times. HP provides drivers and software for Windows 95, 98, 98SE, ME, NT, and 2000.
Of the few downsides to this printer, the most notable is the lack of a manual feed. The only paper tray included is used for all input, so any envelope or label printing requires the removal of paper and readjustment, etc. etc. – at first the trouble is negligible, but it gets annoying if you switch between mediums frequently.
Another problem with the printer is inherent in ink jet technology and isn’t limited only to this device. Our Brother HL-1240 laser printer’s toner cartridge lasted just over a year before it needed to be replaced. The G85’s ink lasted about a month.
