Never Was One For A Prissy Girl..... (Tori Amos Live in D.C 10-8-01)

The Bottom Line Go see Tori in concert.. Sell your parent's car, buy tickets, but GO SEE HER. Offer scalpers your firstborn, BUT GO SEE HER. She Made me Feel brand New.

I saw Tori in DC. And let me tell you, it was Magical. I'd killed myself driving from North Carolina to DC in 4 hours to get to this show. I got pulled over in Virginia for speeding, and have a court date in December. Yes, this day was going well..... I got lost in Virginia, right outside of D.C and found myself in the parking lot of the Pentagon. Just in case you're wondering, there is a large gaping burned out black hole where the plane hit. God, sometimes you just don't come through, I guess. Anyway, I found my friend Panda (Amanda) and we walked over to D.A.R Convention Hall. It was so relaxed, and chill, not like the NYC shows I'm used to, where people camp out all night like psychos to try and get a good spot on the floor. Anyway, we get in, and go buy stuff. Someone Must be insane, because they wanted between 30 and 40 bux for a freaking T-shirt. I cried as I handed over my 50 dollars for a calendar and a shirt. But hey, it's Tori... She's worth it.

We get up to where our seats are. Notice I said UP? Yes, my friend panda, who'd assured me the seats were great had found us seats so high I thought I was going to get Vertigo. I was not pleased. So you can imagine my elation when 2 seconds after we sit down, we're told that due to a blocked view we'd be moved. To make a long story short, 5 minutes later, we were sitting in THE SECOND F(^*&%^*% ROW!!! I could even see the Bosey peeking out of the curtain at me. Shut up, Piano's can peek!!

Rufus Wainright opened for Tori, he has a beautiful, beautiful voice, and he put on a great, but brief show. (45 minutes.) but he was great, children, so go buy all his albums. He was charming too, as he told us about going to a (gay) strip club, and being grossed out at the blatant sex acts being performed onstage and at the bar. Atta Boy!

However, at exactly 9:10 pm, The show begins. The stage is still covered, and this time a picture of Tori dressed up as the murdered mother from her cover of Eminem's Bonnie and Clyde is shown. And then the song begins. I thought she was playing the album version of Bonnie and Clyde (she wasn't, those extra breathy vocals were live backstage, making the song twice as haunting). We all just stared at the picture, the sweet unsuspecting picture, and listened to a horrible, horrible song done so well by Tori. I was creeped out, but excited. and then, the Curtain dropped, and out stepped a red-haired Imp named Tori. And I died... the crowd understandably went nuts, but Tori wasted no time before making her way to the aforementioned Bosendorfer Piano, and began to play a song I didn't know so well, and it was AMAZING.

The song was Siren, off the Great Expectations Soundtrack. I'd heard of the song, but didn't know it, yet it still completely captured my interest. Tori was bitterly belting out the lyrics "Never was one for a prissy Girl, Coquette, calling for an ambulance.... Reach high, doesn't mean she's Holy, just means she's got a cellular handy..." it was so powerfull, so captivating and beautiful, because Tori was bathed in light, and her vocals were perfect. Siren became my new favorite song then and there.

It was brilliant. I was 8 feet away from Tori, and then she just launched into Past The Mission, one of my favorites (they're kinda all my favorites, I need help) from her second Solo Album, Under the pink. Tori ad-libbed during the song, and it was WONDERFUL. I just spent the entire night listening to all these amazing songs I didn't think I'd ever get to see Live, and it was almost too much happiness. It was like the scene described in American Beauty, where the boy says that sometimes the world is filled with so much beauty that his heart just can't take it. that's how I felt, like I would surely burst with happiness... It was the best concert I'd ever seen, and it rivals one of the best nights of my life.

The entire show was amazing, it ran like a greatest hits because Tori played all my favorite songs, it was like a jukebox or something, it just blew my mind... The woman did everything from Sweet Dreams and Upside down to Josephine and Honey, and Me and a Gun..... as well as material from the new album ... but I think it was the opening song Siren which sealed the deal for me. Tori even commented on the baby's teething, and how Husbands are so good at changing diapers, that she just refused to take that away from them. Same old wonderfully crazy Tori.

The point of this rambling collection of thoughts? Go see her. if you can't get tickets go stand outside and strike a deal with a scalper. Just get your tail in and see her. I don't think she's planning on stopping touring, but with this messed up world, we may not be here tomorrow, so don't put it off. It was just so beautiful.

I think the second time I died was when she did Horses. The joy I felt I from Past The Mission didn't compare..... Of course, by the time she hit Silent All These Years in the FIRST encore (there were TWO), I was spent... And all I can say is, after hearing Honey, and watching her close the show with the most beautiful rendition of Somewhere Over The Rainbow... All I can say is if I died right now, I wouldn't feel cheated...

She breaks.....
My Siren.
