Deja Vu all over again... (Reply to this comment)
by skyemoor
Sounds just like me! I picked up a Discovery 12.5" PDHQ after taking an excruciating amount of time to review all the material I could find on the matter. I'm extremely pleased and have a scope that will give me a lifetime of enjoyment before I've exhausted all it can provide.
As the author notes in his comment, this isn't intended as an complete guide, just comments on how to approach some of the buying decisions.

This was not meant to be a comprehensive guide. If you'd like that, in my profile I have an extensive, five page, illustrated document that in the last 10 months has accumulated roughly 2,000 hits.

Please keep working on this (Reply to this comment)
by Pirich
I felt this review would be confusing to a beginner since it only touches on a few areas and jumps between them without explanation. For example, saying dobsonians are common doesn't really help someone who is interested and has picked up a copy of an astronomy magazine and is wondering what the deal is with all sorts of different telescopes such as schmidts, newtonians, refractors, maksutovs, or dobsonians, and why they exist. A second big question would be why some refractors are $200, whicle others cost far more at the same apparent size, and why some people pay $4000 for 4" diameter telescopes when that money will buy something enormous in another design.
I'd suggest starting with an outline and making sure there is an answer to "What is this supposed to tell someone" at the beginning.
I am not trying to discourage you- please keep writing reviews.

Thanks. By trade, I'm now a woodworker. For a while, I was a freelance newspaper writer, but that's when I had a 9-5 job. Now I have a job that can take 20 hours one week and 70 hours the next. I have no way of knowing how much spare time I'll have. I do enjoy writing however. Thanks again.
