Please go back and do some more research. I don't know what is going on with the property now that it is under new ownership, but there were two functioning swimming pools at one time. The Plunge has no Plexiglass windows in its tub. It fronts the wing of rooms closest to the lobby. The second one was amongst its function rooms and the Mermaid Room is next to the Fireside Room, which is across from the bar.

If you get into some the Lodge's more lurid folklore, it has been said it was also used as brothel and the johns used to pick the girls from that window in the Mermaid Room. Whether there's any truth to story, I don't know. That's part of the fun of visiting.

hi =]

we will be giving the brookdale a better review shortly. but we just wanted to correct you something.

about the pool, the brookdale plunge. you say it's shaped like half a donut, which is correct. and yes, it is locked up and not in use, but it does look clean. the owners changed a few months ago and they are currently awaiting the permit to reopen it. but, what i wanted to correct was your next comment... you go on to say 'There is second pool on the premises, behind the lobby, but was closed in the 70s after the death of a teen-age guest who drowned there'. this is sadly, incorrect. as much as I'd like to believe that. sadly it's not true. there is only ONE pool on the premises. the Plunge, which is behind the lobby... Dennis the bartender must have been pulling your leg... the large picture window in the Mermaid Room does look into the pool. i don't know why you state 'No longer.'. I'm assuming you didn't go into the Mermaid Room, because if you had, you would have seen a huge glass window looking into the Brookdale Plunge. we investigated this, and the window does, unfortunately look into the Plunge. we were disappointed too. as it would have been so interesting/creepy if there was a 2nd pool which was closed off because of the death. just wanted to correct you on this. sorry if it's made your ghost story seem less scary =]

I went there today for Easter brunch and to verify some of my details and found it to be a problem-free drive, considering the obstacles the heavy rain has created lately. Although I wouldn't say misfortune never happens on the main roads like Graham Hill or Highway 9, I believe it is the smaller ones that have the most difficulty. The brook definitely had a higher water level and stronger current than I've seen in the past.

As for the blocked access to the public rooms, you have to keep in mind that Brookdale is small town. Small town businesses just operate in ways that big cities won't.

Thanks for an encouraging comment.

I don't think any visit this month will be very pleasant (Reply to this comment)

With all the rains we've had, and the road closures all throughout the Santa Cruz mountains, would a booked guest can finally get to use the public rooms? -unless the bikers are braving the rains, slides & closed roads??? Just guessing. I'd hate to book a room and not be told in advance that there would be areas I couldn't use. I wouldn't be as nice as you were in your review.

Great job.
