The Bottom Line Some are old, some are new, but they all will get to you!

When I saw this category as I was reading around the site, I became excited and eager to share my favorites as I have always loved movies about things that go bump in the night.

My Favorites

These are in no particular order of any kind. Some are older movies and there is actually one that is a new picture that has not been out all that long. I don’t care for gore, which causes me to, well, snore. Some movies are just to gruesome for my taste. I prefer what I call spiritual horror or horror that is a result of someone’s diminished mental capacity.

Salem’s Lot - This is a rather old film that deals with a couple of travelers that encounter a coven of witches.

Unholy- This is your basic struggle between good and evil. A priest mysteriously survives a great fall suffering no injuries, and is given his own church to lead. A church that has been closed many years and has many secrets.

Ghost Story - Emma is a beautiful young and vibrant woman that is killed by some giggling drunk young men. These men, fearing for their futures as lawyers and doctors, load her in her car and drive the car into a lake. Thinking all is over and done with they make a pack to forget any of it ever happened. Years later a mysterious woman comes into the lives of each of their sons, only to try to kill them. The young woman is none other than Emma, the same woman that had been killed by their fathers.

The Shinning - Talk about needing a vacation from your vacation! A family of three, the father being a want-a-be writer, decide to house sit for this large hotel through the winter. The hotel is old, and has a rich past. It’s part of this rich past that finally causes the man to break and chase his family around the large beautiful hotel and grounds with an ax.

Misery - Steven Kings Misery is just that for the writer who’s car slides off the road in the dead of winter and causes him to bust up his leg. He awakens to find that his number one fan has rescued him from imminent demise only to demand he continue to write the series of books that he has planned on retiring. She does everything from busting him up more to drugging him to just keep him typing away for her.

Psycho - When I just hear the word, or see it for that matter, I hear the eerie music from the shower scene of this wonderful old classic horror film. The Bates Motel and the mysterious crazy Mother (that really wasn’t there at all). I think many of us by now, have seen this movie, and it continues to enchant newbies to the horror scene with it’s mysterious plot.

Hill House - This movies set reportedly cost a large fortune, and is breathtakingly beautiful. I think I have to say, this is one of the movies I have watched the most and it largely is due to the beautiful set. This movie is about a sleep experiment for people that suffered with insomnia that went terribly wrong. Beats me how any of them were supposed to feel nice and secure enough to even think about sleeping in this huge place with the strange bumps and thuds, not to mention the strange cries that went on all the time. But it made for a very good movie!

Christine - Another of Steven Kings books tuned movie. This one is about a nerd that was picked on and beaten up by bullies at school who in the end and with a little help from his old but newly restored car, gets total revenge. Christine is the car, not like any other car. She got the taste of blood at the factory and hungered for it from then on. This is another one that I can watch over and over again.

The Others - This one may be playing in a theater near you. I have seen this movie twice at the theater, which is totally not like me at all. This movie has an unusual ending, that I will not give away. Lets just say it is a great movie about a mother and her two children. The children must be kept in light no stronger than that emitted from an oil lantern. Life for them has been hard since their father left to fight in the war, but it is now years after the war and the mother is left to try to run a large house on her own. When up shows three people that will help to forever change her life. ( Or lack thereof.)

Hell House - Hell House is another one about a haunted house. Some people are hired to clean the house of all of it’s evil spirits. They aren’t the first ones to have been hired to take care of this house and the evil that lurks there.

In Closing
I’ve enjoyed all these movies, some several times over the years and highly recommend them to anyone who likes what I call spiritual horror.
