The Bottom Line Read & Learn, Grasshopper

OK, I saw this title, and just had to put my 2 cents in. I am a 36 year old guitarist/programmer, and have been listening to heavy metal since I was about 13. Over the years, I think I've gotten a pretty good feeling about what heavy metal is all about. Without further ado, here's the list (in no particular order):

1. BLACK SABBATH - "MASTER OF REALITY"
The first metal album I ever owned. I've listened to this one so many times, I can recite the album in my head at will. Songs like "Into the Void", "Sweet Leaf", "Lord of this World", and "Children of the Grave" make this recording one of the all time greatest in metal history.

2. AC/DC - "HIGHWAY TO HELL"
Here's one that's permanently etched in my brain. Every song on here is a classic, and while it may not be metal by today's standards, I can assure you that it was about the heaviest album available back in it's day. Best tracks: "Night Prowler", "Touch too Much", "Beating around the bush", and the anthemic "Highway to Hell".

3. MEGADETH - "PEACE SELLS, BUT WHO'S BUYING"
In the mid-80's, Megadeth were the kings of speed-metal composition. Dave Mustaine's genius at songwriting, in spite of all of his personal problems (or because of?), really shine on this recording. Besides the title track (now a practical anthem to metal fans), we have such outstanding tracks as "Wake up Dead", "Devil's Island", and "Good Mourning/Black Friday". A must have for any metal fan.

4. METALLICA - "KILL 'EM ALL"
Metallica's debut album was a shock to the entire music industry. This is the one that started thrash metal. You won't hear any whiny love songs on this one, just brutal thrash metal delivered with a snarl. An all time classic. Best tracks: "The four Horsemen", "Jump in the Fire", "Whiplash", "No Remorse", and "Seek & Destroy". It's a shame they couldn't stick with this formula. Every metal fan had BETTER own this one.

5. LED ZEPPELIN "LED ZEPPELIN II"
Led Zeppelin II was a turning point in metal history. Led Zeppelin aquired the title of "Loudest and Heaviest" after releasing this baby, and the title fit them well. Most metal bands in existence today would not be if it weren't for this single album. Every song a classic. Best tracks: "Whole Lotta Love", "Heartbreaker/Living Loving Maid", "Moby Dick".

6. JUDAS PRIEST - "BRITISH STEEL"
Judas priest were the reigning kings of metal for almost 20 years. Period. "British Steel" is their heaviest album, and also the album that really put them over the top in terms of record sales. This is also an album which is permanently etched in my brain. Best Tracks: "Rapid Fire", "Grinder", "The Rage", "Steeler".

7. METAL CHURCH - "METAL CHURCH"
These guys blew me away when I heard this album for the first time. Metal Church (with David Wayne on vocals) was one of the most innovative metal bands of it's time, and the music still stands up well. All tracks on this album rock, but the best ones are "Beyond the Black", "Metal Church", and "Gods of Wrath".

8. ANNIHILATOR "ALICE IN HELL"
Here's a band you might not have heard of, and one I consider one of the best kept secrets in heavy metal. "Alice in Hell" was Annihilator's first release, and definitely the most brutal. Band founder Jeff Waters is absolutely stunning on guitar, and every song on this album will split your head wide open. This is thrash at it's finest & most brutal. Best tracks are "Alison Hell", "W.T.Y.D", "Schizos (are Never Alone) pts I & II", and "Human Insecticide". Check out the rest of Annihilator's catalog too, every album is a winner.

9. SLAYER - "SEASONS IN THE ABYSS"
Ah, Slayer, mmmmmmm. Slayer, in my mind, are the undisputed speed metal kings. "Seasons in the Abyss" showed Slayer at it's most refined point, with a mix of both groove oriented and speed metal thrash tracks. By far the most popular Slayer album to date, and for good reason. Only one problem tho, if you listen to Slayer, you are going straight to HELL (do not pass GO)!!! Best tracks are "War Ensemble", "Spirit in Black", "Dead Skin Mask", and of course ""Seasons in the Abyss".

10. PANTERA "A VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER"
Pantera has always been a great metal band, but with the release of "Vulgar", they really outdid themselves. They have yet to match the intensity and musical quality that they produced on this album. You are not a metal fan if you don't own this one. Best tracks are "Mouth for War", "Walk", "This Love", and "Hollow".

Well, there are so many albums that deserve honorable mention, that I could not possibly list them all here. Metal is here to stay, and it will be back in force, mark my words!

LONG LIVE ROCK!
