I am currently stuck in the land of Vonage Hell.
I took a chance with a company that has eye catching commercials but are unable to deliver the goods when it matters.
I have had Vonage for about 33 days at this point. When you sign up, you are given a 30 day trial. The trial begins the instant you sign up for service - NOT when you receive and hook up the router and phone. Basically being cheated out of a couple of days of service.
Once I got the phone working I quickly found out that the phone works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. This is not the type of service you hope to have. When it was working, I never made a call on it and decided it truly wasn't something I needed. I hadn't even set up my voicemail.
To give you a better idea - the information they give you when you recieve the router says that it's easy to set up your new service. It took me three days and a phone call into Vonage Customer Service to get it set up - and I'm pretty tech savvy - When I did get it set up I was thrilled. Then I went out of town and when I returned, the phone wasn't working again. Following the information given to me from tech support, it still didn't work.
Today - yes today (4/19/06) - I called and wanted to terminate my service. So, then the Customer Service Rep. asked if I'd like to talk to an advance technician about getting my service to work. I was like, "NO, I'd like to terminate". I was then told of early termination fees, etc and began to reconsider.
Trying to terminate the contract after the 30 days is a challenge. It's like having a cell phone and you're stuck with the service unless you pay the early termination fee. This fee for Vonage is over $100. I am not happy about that. I feel like it's the old "bait and switch" technique.
After hearing my credit card would be charged over $100, I decided to stick with the crappy service for the lowest package of $4.99. I asked, will this be what I'm charged each month? Thinking that this would be the best route to go in order to not pay over $100 up front and actually TRY TO LEARN TO LOVE Vonage. Well.. I get an email shortly and it says $9.99. To my dismay, I was like, "WTF?". So I emailed back - in return to that email, I get a response to a refund concern for ANOTHER customer. I emailed them back, cutting and pasting my info into the email. They stated that this $9.99 fee is the service fee... meaning I will get charged $4.99 PLUS the $9.99 each month. The $9.99 was NEVER mentioned in the phone call I placed to customer service.
I fell for this hook, line, and sinker! Never again will I be tricked into such a thing.
I plan to pay the $100 some-odd dollar amount to be rid of this horrible service. It's unreliable, the contract is cleverly written, and the customer service reps never supply all of the information necessary to make a valued decision.
