The Bottom Line Why go from dealership to dealership, haggling for the best price, when you can get the best price without haggling or leaving your home?

So you want to buy a new car. You know the make, model, options, and even the color you want. Now all you need to do is to make your purchase...GULP! Other than buying a house, it is entirely possible, if not likely, that you will spend more money on a new car than on any other single item! How are you going to make sure that you will get the best price on the vehicle of your choice?

Well, in my epinion:
Terrific Car PLUS A BONUS: HOW TO GET A TERRIFIC PRICE ON IT!
at http://www.epinions.com/content_17813966468
I reviewed the 2001 Toyota Camry and described how I got a great deal on my new car.

In this epinion I will provide more detail and an easy to use step by step outline for the negotiating process. Using my method, you will be able to do all of your negotiating over the telephone in the comfort of your own home, at your own leisure.

1) You must do some homework. It is imperative that you know what you want. Specifically, you must know the make and model and options and color (if you care) of the car you plan to buy. Write down these specifics, so you can refer back to them.

If you are unsure what you want, check some buying guides, go to dealers and test drive, then return to this epinion to continue the process. Do not under any circumstances get drawn into negotiations with anyone at this point. Lie about your identity if you have to, but don't negotiate right now!

Find out what the what the advertised "sale price" is on your desired car. You can look at newspaper ads and go to web sites, like www.autobytel.com, to do some comparison shopping, so you have some idea of what to expect and a bit of ammunition for your first round of negotiations.

Set the date you would like to actually complete the transaction. It will help motivate the car dealers to know that they will have a relatively simple, quick sale if they give you their best price.

2) You need to figure out how far you are willing to travel to save some money. Would you go 20 miles to save 100 dollars? Would you go 50 miles? How far would you travel for 500 dollars, or 1000 dollars?

3) Once you have figured out your travel for the buck guidelines, you need to make a list of every car dealership selling your brand of car within your travel radius. Include the dealerships’ telephone numbers and addresses, and leave room between listings for contact names and to write down prices.

4) Call everyone on the list. Tell them exactly what you are looking for and that you are calling every dealership in the area to get their best price. They will undoubtedly want you to come in to their showroom before giving you the price. Do not do this. Tell them you don’t want to waste their time or yours and you are only going to go to the showroom offering the best price on the phone.

At this point the dealers are likely to try to trick or persuade you. They may tell you that other dealers will tell you one thing over the phone, but when you arrive in their showroom they will have hidden fees attached to the agreed upon sale price. Very sweetly explain that if anyone pulls that on you, you will walk right out of their showroom. This should not be an idle threat, you should not do business with anyone who does this.

If a dealer refuses to quote a price over the telephone, or if you are getting tired of arguing with them, politely tell them you understand if they don’t want to give you a quote over the phone. Explain that you will only buy your car from someone willing to serve you in the way in which you need to be served and if they can’t do that, you will simply call someone who can. This will almost certainly convince them that they had better work with you over the phone.

Do not let anyone intimidate you. If someone is getting too aggressive, either ask to speak to their sales manager or hang up. You are in charge here.

5) After you have gone down your list of geographically acceptable dealers and gotten your price quotes, call each one back and tell them the current lowest quote and ask them if they can beat it. This will weed out some, or maybe all, of the competition.

6) Call back everyone who beat the lowest price in the first round with the new lowest price. Continue doing this until you have weeded out your best price. Hopefully you will engage a price war!

7) Once you are satisfied that you have the lowest price in the area go out there and buy your fabulous, new, bargain priced automobile, knowing that you got the best deal possible.
