The Bottom Line Children love doing something for others, especially now more than ever.
I am now a Youth Director, and one of the greatest challenges I have had in the past 4 months has been getting the children I work with to give part of themselves to charity. I finally found a way around that, which isn't very difficult, and can be quite enjoyable for everyone. The best part about it, giving to a sick child to make them smile. Originally my students had come up to me asking me if they could read books on tape for the blind, for a social action project. I thought this was a great idea, only one problem that program requires you to have a special type of machine to read on, and make the tapes. So I started to think of projects that they could work on for their social action project. I finally came up with an idea of reading books on tape for sick children at Miami Children's hospital(MCH). I remember growing up, being extremely sick for months on end, and getting cards from people I didn't know, in fact I still have those cards to this very day. I brought the suggestion to my students. They all loved it. So we decided we would make 3 tapes with stories and give the books as well to the children and create home made cards. I thought harder and thought about how I wanted to present these items of love to the children at MCH. I went through the crafts stores and came across these little pompoms that had pictures of animals on the top area that seals the bag. WHAT a cool Idea I thought! Well we were planning on giving the basket for Thanksgiving, so I thought hard and wondered if we could make a turkey out of the pompoms, the answer is YES YOU CAN!. So here is what we did to make the little pom pom animals. Taking the pom poms, we made turkeys by using felt, art foam (the kind you can find for scrap book albums that come in different shapes), and google eyes. It is pretty simple. first you take a big pom pom(the pack I got had many sizes and can be found probably at any craft store), and place the eyes on where ever you would like to, this indicates the front so that you can continue working from there. I got foam pieces that were in a feather shape(actually they were christmas lightbulbs but they did the job very well). I used multi-color feathers, and glued them in a fan shape for the tail feathers, then placed them onto the pompom. NOW comes the fun part, making that little beak. Using orange felt, I made a little triangle, that was big enough to fold and using tacky glue, we pasted the edge of the triangle to the pom pom between the eyes. To make it a little cuter I went and took Yellow felt and created feet for them(basically I just cut a heart shape and pasted it to the bottom of the pom pom). I will say this much I made with the children 200 little pom pom creatures(some elephants, panda bears, teddy bears, lady bugs, penguins, etc...). The best glue to use was the tacky glue and a glue gun since they hold the pom poms best. Regular glue works but it takes more effort to keep them attached! The second part of the art part of this project was making home made cards. I got tons of card stock, and colored construction paper, scrapbook scissors, markers, crayons, and different ink pads, and rubber stamps. They sat and made 100 cards with the stamps and created some very nice pictures as well as some very innovative ways of making cards (one child made a pop up card that was very creative). This project isn't hard to do, and gets the children active as well as doing something good, while having fun! This takes little effort, and can keep anyone occupied. If you ever want to do something fun either for a group as a project, like we did, or have fun with your children on a weekend rainy day, this is a wonderful way of keeping them occupied. If you have any interest in joining in our project by making cards for children at Miami Children's hospital at all, please email me at ilene@webglance.com, we would love to have as many cards as possible for the anonymous present! The final present will be given to them on November 21,2001. It will be 3 books and the matching tapes(Harry the Dirty Dog, Where the Wild things are, and The Sneetches), as many cards as possible. 200 pom pom animals, and a copy of the movie "Shrek". |
