I always thought dishwasher detergents were all the same basically, so I used a generic product for a couple of years. I also thought I had a lousy dishwasher because my dishes always came out filmy and my glasses spotty. Duh!
When I moved into my new house I found that my new dishwasher was lousy too! Yeah, I realized it was time to change products. So, after pondering over a few different brands, I chose Palmolive Gel Dishwasher Detergent, Lemon Grove scent. I chose Palmolive because it is a product distributed by Colgate Company who, by the way, are celebrating their 200th anniversary this year. That is a long time to be in business and a successful one at that.
I have used a couple of their products lately including, Suavitel Fabric Conditioner and have been very satisfied with them. I chose gel because it seems it would dissolve easily without leaving a powdery film. I have never liked the powder, although it may have done a better job than the product I was using.
The Product:
This product comes in a 75oz yellow plastic bottle with a large indented handle for easy handling. It has a flip-top cap with a larger than usual dispensing hole which I find is a plus for when you get down to the last dregs. It smells like, ummm
chlorine bleach with a hint of lemon
I figured it would be the other way around. The gel is white and creamy, not so thick that it is hard to dispense like my generic product was. I bought this product for $2.99 at my local HEB grocery store.
This product is also safe for septic tanks.
Performance:
Well, it warns on the bottle not to let it come in direct contact with silver items because it may cause brown spots so be careful in that area. I always rinse my dishes and wipe them off before putting them in the dishwasher and as far as stuck on food goes, well, you cant expect miracles so I usually hand wash those first also. My main aim is to have sparkling clean dishes without film or spots. It was easy to pour into my two dispensers because it is not very thick and required only a minimal squeezing of the bottle. I had a greasy pyrex dish in their as well as regular dishes, silverware and glasses.
I could smell the chlorine bleach ingredient as it was washing, not much in the lemon scent area. However, when I pulled out my glasses, they were really sparkling clean. Not a bit of film and no spots. My dishes were equally sparkling and my pyrex dish was also squeaky clean. I was delighted. I didnt have to return my new dishwasher.
Just a few important warnings:
Contains chlorine bleach (naaaw) and silicate salts. Do not use for hand washing. Do not mix with ammonia or other cleaning products as irritating fumes may result. Avoid contact with fabric.
Keep out of reach of children.
Contains 1.6 percent phosphorus in the form of phosphate.
Conclusion:
I thought that I would be using a few different products before I found one that did the job. However, I hit the nail on the head when I picked up Palmolive Gel Dishwasher Detergent. It does have a strong chlorine bleach and not so lemony odor but I can put up with that if it cleans my dishes. It was worth spending that extra few cents to gain such different results.
Although I cannot recommend it for dried on food as I| generally wash food off before putting my dishes in the dishwasher, I can say that this product gives your dishes and glasses a sparkling shine without film or spots. That is the result I was after and this product came through with flying colors.
