| remnjava's Full Review: Hawley Bed and Breakfast/Lincoln, NE |
Hubby and I needed to get away. Ive known Peg for several years via the internet. Weve chatted on the phone a time or two, as she had aspirations of having her own bed and breakfast. Peg and John are the innkeepers at the Hawley House Bed and Breakfast in Lincoln, Nebraska. This building is actually a townhouse built around 1893. The floor plan is duplex style with the right half of the house mirroring the left half. There were four apartments in this two-story building, which are being restored to their original style. There will be two suites upstairs and two suites downstairs.
Arriving at the bed and breakfast at 5:30 PM, we were greeted by Peg, the innkeeper. She treated us to cookies fresh from the oven. I complimented her on them, and she mentioned her 8-year-old granddaughter has a business selling cookies and cookie dough. They were delicious! Along with them we were offered a choice of coffee or tea. Having known Peg through the internet for the past 3 years, yet never meeting, we chatted and caught up on our businesses.
Tuesday night was American Idol night, and we couldnt miss it, of course! We were invited to watch the portable color television with cable that was in the dining room. We were treated to even more beverages and cookies!
Our bedroom was in the corner of the suite, with a closet and lamps on either side of the bed. A dresser was present in case we needed it, but we tend to travel light. Our room had two doors, one led out to the hallway near the front door. A set of glass French doors at our feet, lead into the parlor. The bathroom was just beyond that, near the kitchen.
The parlor had a nice U shaped seating arrangement that seated perhaps 6 people. It had two loveseats and two chairs. An electric fireplace added a nice comfortable glow to the room on this rainy day. Copies of Victoria magazine were there for the reading. A large quilt was made by her grandmother at the turn of the century and hangs on the wall behind her loveseat.
The bathroom had a clawfoot tub, complete with rounded shower curtain and extension arm shower head. There was a small vanity in the room. A handicap stool was readily available if one could not stand up in the shower.
The queen bed, complete with 400-500 count thread sheets, was very comfortable, as were the pillows. I rolled over a time or two, and slept like a log until my husband woke me at 6:30 AM! By that time, Peggy was already in the kitchen starting our 9:00 AM breakfast. I wandered in there and chatted, waiting for my husband to wake up.
In the offering for breakfast was: orange juice, coffee, homemade blueberry muffins, parfait with tapioca and mandarin oranges, ham, omelet style eggs and hash browns! As our breakfast wound down, Peggy made conversation with us, asking about our upcoming day, and other shop talk.
Peggy was a good conversationalist in this clean bed and breakfast. She would be pleased to take your reservation with the software on her website. She can accept credit cards through Paypal, accepting cash, Travelers Checks and regular money orders. She requests payment via mail 5 days in advance. The room rate is $80 plus 12% tax. The rate for two or more nights is $70 per night plus tax. Gift certificates are available, but they cannot be redeemed for cash. Gays as well as straights are welcome. No smoking is allowed on the premises. She does not accept pets, but can recommend a good kennel.
