There are several different reasons to download MP3's , all of these are legal! We bought the music. Whether it was stolen, lost, broken or not compatible, the music is ours. Give the artists there due but also give the consumer there due. Music distributors are no longer necessary. All a band needs is a sound and a websight. It's all about exposure. You can't kill technology.
I have purchased a lot of music in my 22 years. I've been robed of the music I've already paid for.
Metallica, for instance, is a band I have bought a lot of music from. I spent $150.00 dollars for a box set of 3 CD's and 3 videos. My house was broken into and the box set is gone!!! I paid my hard earned money on this music. Now you want to tell me I can't listen to it? I paid for it! I should be able to download and burn a new set. Is this copyright infringement? I also have had a CD player and a CD case, with over 50 CD's, stolen from my car. The music belongs to me not the "friend" that stole it. The number of people that this same thing has happened to is endless. If you don't believe me, check your local pawn shop (largest distributor of stolen goods). You can also check police reports like I have. In these cases there were no copyright infringements. Take back what was stolen from you!
OOPS! The CD was scratched. The tape broke.
Ever since the down of music recording, man has tried to come up with a way to store and mass distribute sound. Problems plague all of these forms. Let us start with 8 tracks and records. Portability and quality stricken, there life was short. Enough said on that subject. Next came the cassette tape. This proved to be a much more reliable source for distribution. I can't recall how many tapes have been: eaten by my tape player, warped by the sun, lost by a friend, played out, or just plain broke. CD's were the next big craze. This is the one you must gently place on a velvet cloth to keep it from scratching. It's like a compact record. The same flaws appear on both the record and CD. (except portability) Why should we wait for the next major disappointment by the record labels? The point is we the people of the USA own this music. We bought the right to listen to it, not the right to own a piece of plastic. If you have ever fallen pray to the inability of the record labels, it's time to RISE! RISE! RISE! IT'S TIME TO RISE!
Space shifting, is the other use for Napster.
I own a lot of old records, tapes and CD's. To listen to the music that I have purchased, I would have to purchase it again. This suggestion is ludicrous. Why couldn't I just use Napster or Imesh to download these songs? Burn them onto a CD and enjoy. I only want to be able to shift the music from one media to another. This way, I can enjoy it all in my house, car, work, or wherever I go. Napster and Imesh make it happen. I don't have to go by the CD (I already have the record). I don't have a record player in my car. This is in no way infringing the copyright of the RECORD LABEL (that was close I almost wrote artest) Burn baby Burn.
It's the beginning of the end for record labels. They can no longer push around artists. Let us not forget the artists. Keep in mind that the band, composer and crew did work hard to make this music. I love you all for that. However the average band makes near to nothing for each record sale. Let freedom ring.
