I'll probably be in trouble with the editorial board for this ...

Pros:High quality. Great sound. Affordable. Versatile.
Cons:Nothing at all. Honest.
The Bottom Line: If Jamo is a brand you don't know about, investigate it. You won't be disappointed. See their web site for more details.

But I'll write anyway. The product depicted here specifically is sold as a set. However, my home theater rig features six Jamo speakers, none of which are included in this set, or anywhere else on the Epinion site for that matter. But since Jamo is not a well-known brand (certainly not a household name like Yamaha or JBL or Sony), I thought some of my experiences with Jamo might be useful to the buying public. Or maybe not. You be the judge.

INTRO

Actually, I have eight Jamo speakers in my system:

* Five identical model 661K4 2-Way 6˝ inch speakers, mounted in individual wall enclosures as front pair, center, and two rear surround speakers. The three front speakers are mounted symmetrically in the wall around my Hitachi 42" gas plasma monitor.

* One Sub 6510 sealed (bass reflex) powered subwoofer rated at 650 watts of peak power, also in my home theater room. Since deep bass is non-directional, the subwoofer sits in a corner, where the wiring can disappear unobtrusively into the floor.

* Two 3A2 indoor/outdoor speakers that serve my deck/pool area. These speakers feature 5 1/4" main drivers and 1" tweeters in a molded enclosure with integral mounting brackets. CAUTION: small high-quality drivers attached to high-power amplifiers can be made to play LOUD, which is not always desired when you have neighbors. If you decide to go with outdoor speakers, install an outdoor volume control.

PERFORMANCE

Subwoofer: Normally, I would never use a term like "peak power" (which has been used all too often by oily stereo dealers to mask low or "dirty" power in inferior amps) to describe a speaker. But I bring this up in the case of the Jamo subwoofer to point out that this speaker's built-in power amp has oodles of reserve power. Short bursts of high power held in reserve are necessary to realistically reproduce the attack of deep low bass tones (clean down to 30 hertz or lower), like the momentary punch and crack of cannon shots (Patriot by Gibson) or revving airplane engines (Aviator by Scorsese) in movies, or tympani, jazz string bass, and pipe organ in recorded music. In inferior speakers, lack of reserve power causes real nastiness called "clipping," in which the signal is truncated because the amp simply can't deliver the goods. I guarantee you won't like sound of a power amp in clipping. No problem with the Sub 6510, though, in this regard or any regard.

The bass produced by this speaker is simply phenomenal, the best I've heard at any price. Here, the price is reasonable (about $500). The look is unobtrusive, with black wood veneer, black grill, and black brushed aluminum trim. There is a blue LED running light that indicates power is on. The back features three controls: volume, center frequency, and roll-off (don't worry -- these are essentially "set it and forget it" controls, adjusted only at installation). There is no power switch -- the subwoofer's amplifier simply comes on when the system sends out its original turn-on "thump" and cycles out after about 15 minutes of no signal arriving in its frequency range. This may happen when you're listening to movies at low volume (I know -- who would do such a thing?)

Main/center/satellites: These are clean, clean, clean. With an 6 1/2" Kevlar main driver (some might call them a woofer) moved by a chunky magnet, and a small dome tweeter made of silk, these deliver uncolored sound that is flat above about 120 hertz. Working in concert (no pun intended) with the subwoofer, these speakers reproduce nuance and detail that I've never previously encountered in my source material. They are housed in plain-looking, paintable white wall mounted surrounds, with a paintable steel grill that snaps in place over the drivers. They are very unobtrusive in my system. Each speaker also has a small knock-out panel that can be used to mount an infrared receiver "eye" that can be used to deliver remote signals to electronic components in another location like an equipment closet. In short, these satellite speakers are well-engineered and very capable. And did I mention clean?

PROs: High, high quality, both in construction and in the delivered sound. Affordable in the context of a high-end audio/video system. Versatile and adaptable with respect to room decor.

CONs: Geez. I can't think of any, really. One metal speaker grill was warped so that it didn't fit exactly correctly in the mounting groove. The vendor replaced it immediately.
