Masks 101

The Bottom Line There are two kinds of Masks, Clay and Glycolic. Clay absorbs oil and Glycolic exfoliates. Everything else is just frosting.

Masks are part of a beauty regime. Most are used once or twice a week but always read the label and follow your directions. There are two main types clay and glycolic. What one is right for you; truly depends on your skin type and what you are trying to achieve with your treatment.

The most common mask is Clay. Clay masks absorb oils. You can find them for 50 dollars and you can find them for 3. The kind of clay makes no difference, they all do the same thing. It has been said in other reviews but I will say it again. If you use these too often your skin will begin to go into overdrive in oil production. At the most use them twice a week.

Glycolic masks are next. These masks are often sold as Alpha Hydroxy, fruit and enzyme masks. These are used for anti-aging and exfoliation purposes. These masks may help prevent fine lines, but they will not remove them. This is an area where price does become an issue. I think the higher end products can be more beneficial in this area because, for the most part, they use higher grade ingredients in product. I used to think that there was no difference until I tried some of the more expensive products. Be careful. Watch for redness and peeling, if this occurs your skin is too sensitive and you should scale back your usage or try another product depending on the severity.

There can be many additives in a mask. Try not to duplicate an acid or vitamin in the mask that you are already using in another treatment. Too much of a good thing on your skin can be bad. If you do duplicate something, skip it for the day. So if you use a alpha hydroxy leave on and your mask contains it too, skip the leave on after you use the mask.

Those are the basics.
