I've mentioned the problem of my dog throwing up for no apparent reason in my previous Oxy Deep review. My wife seems to think she does this when she has an empty stomach and the fact that yellow bile is all she throws up would lend credence to this theory. We also had the extreme pleasure of watching our neighbor's puppy for a week. They said she was potty-trained. She was not. So we had a whole other set of pet mess to deal with.
In cleaning one of the many varieties of dog fluids that were spilled upon the carpet in that week, we ran out of our faithful cleaner, Oxy Deep. Since we had a coupon, I decided to try the special OXY Deep 2X Pet Stain & Odor Carpet Cleaner. Did it work as well as our faithful vomit cleaner? Did it work better?
Read on, dear reader...
•• What it is ••
OXY Deep 2X Pet Stain & Odor Carpet Cleaner is a spray-on carpet cleaner designed to clean all sorts of pet stains.
•• Features and Commentary ••
The first thing to notice is that this is a package a guy could really get used to. It consists of two brushed metal silver cans connected by the label. At the top is a large spigot with a handle and trigger. It's like a double barrelled gun of cleaning madness. I felt like it should have come with a holster and license to conceal.
The two tanks consist of cleaning fluids that mix on application. This is a gimmick of incredible proportions. Is there really a reason to separate the two cleaning fluids? Will there be a some nuclear meltdown if the two cleaners are stored in the same container? I kind of doubt it since I would expect one of the containers to contain classic Oxy Deep, a derivative of Oxygen bleach, the lesser powerful, red-headed stepchild of Clorox chlorine bleach. Along those same lines, the plastic handle attached to the 2 canisters is quite flimsy. It had far more give than I would expect and flexed when I swung the can back and forth.
Application is easy. Simply push in the small plastic child-proofer and squeeze the trigger. There is no pumping like a traditional bottle of cleaner. The liquid inside the canisters is compressed and the pressure forces a constant stream of cleaner. And the pressure in the stream is enough to drill the color out of your carpet. Seriously, the cleaner sprays out with such ferocity that I had to stand back to avoid the splash of the stream. Given the high pressure, it's nearly impossible to use the cleaner without totally saturating the affected area. (I found this funny: The bottle says to pick up any pieces of solid debris in the stain before using. I pictured someone spraying it directly on dog poop and then coming back wondering why the poop was still there.)
This brings me to the next problem, in that stream is the only mode of application. What, no spray? Nope. And this is silly design since most messes left by pets will be over a certain radius of carpet. So in order cover the entire spot, you'll end up needing to spray longer, thereby using more cleaner.
So does it work? Well yes. It works as well as normal Oxy Deep, but not noticeably better. Supposedly, the formula is pH balanced to neutralize any odors and to keep pets from messing the same spot. But here's a trick: a 99 cent bottle of white vinegar will do the same thing. That said, the spot where our dog vomited was cleaned and smelled fine. She actually vomited on a throw rug and the mess had spread to the actual carpet below leaving a yellow stain on the rug, the rug backing, and the carpet below. After letting the cleaner soak for a while and then blotting it up as directed, the stain in the carpet was gone. I lifted up the rug. The backing was clean as was the carpet below. As with Oxy Deep, the product worked fantastically.
So is it worth it? Well, no. Yes, the product works. Yes it smells nice without being overpowering or smelling like chemicals. But since there is only 14 oz of cleaner versus the 22 oz in Oxy Deep at the same price, this is really a no brainer. There is no reason to get less cleaner for the same amount of money when it does the same job.
Also, I know how to recycle a cleaning bottle: Take off the spraying head, rinse out the bottle, toss it int he recycling. With this thing, I have no idea where to begin. There is very little plastic to be recycled and those metal cylinders are a bit daunting. Do I toss them in the aluminum recycling? Do I just throw them away? Do I take the to my nearby military installation for debriefing? I'm just not sure.
•• Conclusion ••
The OXY Deep 2X Pet Stain & Odor Carpet Cleaner works well, but is not worth the extra money when classic Oxy Deep works just as well.
