Update 28-03-02 : Bad news for free search submit lovers,Hotbot has dropped its submission service, which means you must now pay to be placed or be fortunate enough to be found by the Inktomi spiders. Hotbot is one search engine that can get a submitted website into the coveted Inktomi partnership network, which include MSN search (not directory) AOL search, Compuserve , iWON and many Inktomi portals ( however these are the ones that a free submission is most likely to be listed with ) Some meta-search engines (which are multiplying at a ferocious pace) and search programs such as the very popular Copernic 2001 search software carry Hot Bot or Inktomi allies and therefore the potential to bring visitors to your site. The down side of Hotbot can be the long wait required (often 2 months or more) which, however is well rewarded particularly as Inktomi (via Position Tech) and MSN Search, are generally pay to be listed affairs . Hotbot itself is not a very popular search engine and is unlikely to bring the web site owner much traffic The free inclusion in MSN search (currently ranked 4th in search popularity) and AOL search ( ranked 5th in front of Alta Vista) via a Hotbot listing will bring visitors, provided your site can be found. Preparing your site for submission to Hotbot ------------------------------------------------------------ Basic : Ask this question - can a very simple text based browser navigate my site ? The search engine spider is only interested in text and ignores flash, graphics(to a great extent) and java, it is a good idea to have at least 200 words on each page. ------------------------------------------------------------ Keywords : * Select target keywords relevant to your theme that people actively search with, use the Overture keyword suggestion tool, which shows you how many searches were done on a particular word or phrase last month (useful as an indicator only) : http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/ * Title ( meta - tag , not the page heading ) is supreme, make sure your primary keyword or phrase is in title e.g. Vodka cocktails * Learn about meta-tags and put relevant key words which relate to page content in description tag and keyword tag * Choose the teaser or opening few sentences carefully and include the primary key word(s) and what is relevant to a searcher e.g "looking for a vodka cocktail recipe ?" * create or re-work page to have a reasonable key word density (number of times a word or phrase appears ) particularly within the first 250 words * If possible put a keyword in URL e.g : www. mysite .com vodka_cocktails.html Next get your site analyzed by a service like Meta-Medic(free) which checks your site for optimum placement of keywords, keyword density and other useful checks You may be surprised how much impact the intelligent placement of keywords will have on your ranking . Bear in mind getting a free listing on Inktomi via Hotbot is a hit and miss affair , a commercial site is far better off paying for this service.  |
