Law School Admission Test (LSAT)

Oct 30 '01

The Bottom Line The LSAT is the entrance test required by all Law School Admissions Council member law schools.

Ah, the LSAT, such wonderfully frightening memories!
You will be nervous, it's normal. But if you have done some studying before hand, you will be prepared.

The LSAT is exactly what it says, the test you must take to enter Law School. Now along with the test itself is the LSDAS, which is the Law School Data Assembly Service. This service is how the prospective law schools get your LSAT grades.

The LSAT itself is roughly a half day affair. It is comprised of five 35-minute multiple choice sections and one 30 minute writing sample. These sections cover reading comprehension, analytical reasoning, and logical reasoning. Only 4 of the 5 sections are counted, they use the fifth to preview new test ideas. Since you will not know which 4 of the 5 is counted, do your best on all of them.

The purpose of the test itself as a pre-requisite of law school entrance, is to measure your ability to read and understand complex work, the ability to draw inferences from what you have read, and the ability to reason critically.

There are stringent rules that you must follow before and during the process.
First you must register to take the test, choosing one of the given dates. Registration comes with a fee that must be paid. You should receive a confirmation of your registration and this will include your admission ticket. (Didn't think they were going to let just anyone show up did you?) On the day of the test, take your admission ticket, one form of ID, and some pencils with good erasers.

Be sure to listen to directions and follow them by the letter!

After that, all you do is wait for your scores. If you feel you did poorly, you can cancel the score within a certain time period. But most probably, you will find you did better than you thought.

The LSDAS will send your results to any law school you requested and will send you a monthly activity summary, so you know just who has or has not received your scores.

One hint for the test I will give you, become very familiar with logic puzzles!
