I always like to read the other reviews of a product before writing one. Boy there is no middle ground with GoDaddy. It seems people either love them or hate them.
I hope to tie the extreme viewpoints together to help you make an informed decision.
My Experience with Go Daddy
My own experience with Go Daddy has been reasonably positive. I have 19 domains total that I manage for myself or other people. I don't use any of Go Daddy's other services except for one turbo SSL cert I bought from them.
Customer Service
I can't complain about GoDaddy's customer service. They have been 24/7 and responsive to me when I've had a problem. It helps to speak the lingo. I can out-jargon most of their reps and I understand how DNS and zone files and nameservers and all the rest of it work. So whenever I've had a problem I've been able to articulate the problem clearly in their lingo and have gotten satisfaction in a reasonable amount of time.
Website
Go Daddy's website, for all you may not like the cheesy aggressive buy buttons all over the place, actually works pretty well from the standpoint of managing domains. I just have to pretend that I'm playing Operation whenever I go on Go Daddy's website. Tread lightly and don't touch that screaming huge red button exhorting you to add this or that for just $9.99 or View our other options. Look for the tiny print light blue link that says "just continue without spending any more money."
Godaddy lets you manage a group of domains all at once. I like their brand new nameserver setting. Previously you had to unlock your domain, wait a little while, then set your nameservers, then remember to lock it back up. That was obviously such a common sequence that now when you say set nameservers, it automatically unlocks, sets, and locks up again. I like that. And GoDaddy has gotten faster and faster at having the changes take effect. Once you buy a domain it's immediately on your panel and you can start dinking with it.
Personality Cult
Bob Parsons is a cut-throat SOB megalomaniac, no doubt about it. There's another guy like that, named Bill Gates. I'm convinced that the nice guys don't end up in first place. So what? I don't have to read his rants. (and after the first one, I don't any more.)
By way of comparison
I just registered four $3 domains with ipowerweb just for the heck of it. Ipowerweb's control panel is a dinosaur compared to GoDaddy's. It all worked, but there's a lot of scrambling from nearly white screen to nearly white screen, a separate login for each domain, and it's generally a pain, And I had to wait for emails in order to start managing my domains. With GoDaddy it's instant.
Transfers IN
I have had one experience transferring a domain INTO GoDaddy from enom. It was a headache but the bottleneck was actually the people at the previous enom reseller dragging their feet about releasing it. I can't fault GoDaddy for that. I see no reason why they would want to impede such a transaction; actually it's them that stands to gain from it.
Transfers OUT
I haven't tried to move any of my domains out of GoDaddy. I've been using them for 4 years. Transferring domains either way at best is a tightrope walk involving interfacing with potentially some other contact, and tons of authorization passwords etc that have to take place in a certain order.
Some of the previous reviews claim that GoDaddy virtually has you by the short and curlies and they block the exit and they will cancel your account if you tick them off. But none of them described exactly the technical hell that they went through, so I'm inclined to believe it is a perception, based on the fact that domain transfer is just plain a hassle and involves interfacing between potentially six parties.
I'm sure that sooner or later I will have to move a domain out of GoDaddy to somewhere else and then I can see for myself what crap they try to pull (and I'm not doubting that they might try to pull something.) I'm sure they would not be eager to do it and might try to bamboozle people. Yes I can also imagine them paddling a customer at the exit if they are losing ALL his business. But as for parties being piqued or ticked off, GoDaddy might prefer not to tick ME off -- they would lose all other 18 domains I have going with them if they did. As for cancelling my account, I would take them to court and win if they tried that on me. As long as I have unexpired domains registered through them that I have paid for they are obliged to provide me a means to manage them, and I am sure any court of law would see it my way.
Overall I am satisfied with GoDaddy the way I use it.
Primarily I see them as a domain registrar. I know they provide hosting and other services, which I can't comment on because I have never used them.
