The Bottom Line On Veteran's Day, let's make sure that we are still doing all that we can locally to help our country recovery from this terrible tragedy.
In less than two weeks, it will be two months since the terrorist attacks upon our nation at the Pentagon and the World Trade Center. Since that time we have seen the horrible decimation of our mail system by individuals who quite frankly do not care about the well-being of others but yet we are not able to ascertain as to whether or not the September 11th incident and the Anthrax ones are related. (however, I would bet money they are!) Even so, now that our country is nearing Veterans’ Day on November 11th, the two month anniversary of our nation’s tragedy, I believe that there are things still that each one of us can do to help our country locally in this hour of continuing need. Continue to Donate Blood Blood is the essence of life to each one of us. Even though there was a great demand to give blood immediately after the tragedy, we have to remember that donation really needs to be a continuous process in order to help in another similar incident. Every day, I go past the Red Cross office on my way to pick up my son. For quite some time the entire parking lot was packed each afternoon. However, the volunteers have seemingly fallen off, leaving the need still again there to be met. For each one of you that can contribute, I encourage you again to donate blood to the Red Cross. Spend Money Because consumer confidence is currently lowered, our economy is teetering on the edge of a recession. With the holiday season nearby, it is natural for each one of us spends probably more than our original budget needs for Christmas presents. While I don’t condone a mass running of credit cards to meet Christmas shopping needs, I would like to still encourage people to not be so afraid as to spend money on things that you and your family would like or for gift purchases. The most powerful weapon that the Bin Ladin and other terrorist regimes has is to instill fear into the people that they want to hurt – us! We need to continue to stand proud with the colors of the red, white, and blue to let the terrorists know that we will not be afraid of their threats and that in the end, we will survive and thrive. Honor Your Veterans and Servicemen The last thing I would like to ask individuals to do is to honor both the current and past service men of our nation. November 11th is Veterans Day and I believe that each one of us who can should attend ceremonies, parades, and other services supporting those who served bravely for our country. In addition, I know of many veterans who are now in hospitals – many without family or friends to visit them anymore. If you are able to volunteer to spend a few hours a week visiting with these noble men and women, I am sure that they would feel very blessed with your presence. Also, encourage your local businessmen to go out of their way for Veteran’s Day. Here in our town, many of the local businessmen are serving any military personnel, or veteran in uniform or with credentials with free lunch or dinner. And for those of our local citizens, family, and friends who are not at home now but are serving currently for our nation, I say that we do whatever we can to let them know that we appreciate them and support them. Dear Abby often had a writing campaign to send cards and letters to servicemen for Christmas. However, with the anthrax scare that activity was actually discouraged by the government. Yet, there are these things called “postcards” (grin) that are not envelopes and I believe that if each one of us sends a post card with a picture on the back that it would brighten up a soldier’s day indeed. Conclusion So, there are still ways that we can make an impact locally to help deal with the recovery of the terrorism attacks. By giving blood, showing our consumer confidence, honoring veterans, and touching the lives of current servicemen supporting our country we can truly make a mark upon someone’s life that can not be erased. I encourage you to continue to take action and help as you can to again support our country in this time of our nation’s need. |
