It's a matter of taste

The Bottom Line Rechargeable batteries

I know I've said it a thousand times already, but it bears repeating. When buying electronics, buy rechargeable batteries. Most portable audio devices will use a lot of batteries, either at once or over a period of time. Most boom boxes may use 6-8 C or D batteries and batteries are what keep a boom box portable. While portable CD players have gotten better, disposables can still be expensive.

I don't know that boom boxes are really seen as portable any more. They're getting smaller, but most people want something that fits into a backpack. Before smaller devices became cheap, boom boxes were a favorite for going to the beach or just hanging out. They have the radio and tape functions that portable tape players come with and also have the ability to play CDs. Portable CD players rarely have the radio function that I like, but I don't listen to tapes so buying a portable tape player isn't worth it.

The thing to look for in portable CD players is anti-skip technology and long battery life. Most models in store play CD-Rs and kits for your car stereo are useless because so many cars these days already have CD players. Check out what other options the various models have and be sure to shop around.

Portable tape players are all but extinct. Many people have already converted to CDs. They only real advantage to a tape player is for the jogger. I rarely use tapes anymore. Yeah, they're rewritable, but there's too much of a sacrifice in quality. Right now, I'm looking forward and not backward. That means portable MP3 players.

They have more storage capacity than several CDs and better flexibility than tapes. I'm interested, but at the current prices, I'm going to have to wait. Most of the ones I like cost several hundred dollars and I can't afford to put that kind of money down. Ultimately, it's a matter of needs. I don't need those features at that kind of price. Your best bet is to ask around and see if anyone is willing to lend you a device. That's the best way to figure out what you'll be needing.
