MOVE OVER TUPPERWARE, I'M TAKING ALONG MY TAKEALONG!
Written: May 13 '06
Pros:Disposable, reuseable, hardy, withstands heat and freezing well.
Cons:Lids are sometimes tight to put on.
The Bottom Line: TakeAlongs have handles on the sides to prevent burning fingers. They are durable, spacious and cheap.
Long time ago, I was a Tupperware freak. I had a whole cupboard specifically for my Tupperware products, all sizes and shapes. I attended my fair share of Tupperware parties and always came home with something.
I remember packing my daughters lunches and being mortified if she forgot to bring the container home. I still have a couple of pieces left but who needs the hassle now there are disposable containers that come cheaper and are also washable and reusable. After buying a few different brands, I have found that Rubbermaid TakeAlongs suit me best, especially the deep Square type.
The Product:
Rubbermaid claims this product is:
Microwave reheatable, top rack dishwasher and freezer safe
Double seal keeps food in the container and helps prevent spills
Soft lid grips container tightly for great seal, yet is easy to open, even out of the freezer
Large tab makes the container easier to grip when opening
Attractive scalloped lid and frosted base add style
This container comes made of a fairly durable plastic that is reinforced on the bottom which is shaped into a four-pointed base. This gives me the confidence that the container will not collapse from the bottom when it is full and it rests safely on the base.
One of the reasons I like these best is that there are two small handles on each side. This enables you to pick the container up when its contents are hot without getting burned. The lid has a large tab on one corner, which makes it easy to open. They are semi-opaque and white in color but it is easy to see what is inside them. I like the fact that these containers can be washed in the dishwasher, can be used in a microwave or freezer. The containers come in a set of five with lids for around $2.00.a set and you can stack them neatly in the cupboard without taking up too much room.
My Experience:
I get plenty of use out of these containers. I always have leftovers and I take them to a very grateful guy at work who lives alone and eats TV dinners most of the time. One of these deep square type containers is 6 inches by 6 inches and just over 3 inches deep so they can hold a whole meal comfortably. I separate the side dishes with foil.
I make meatballs in bulk and freeze them in these containers and they fare well for months at a time. I also use them to transport food easily, to make puddings and fruit salads in and to keep bread fresh. I also use them for an assortment of cookies I bake to keep those fresh. My daughter bleaches her shoelaces in them and I soak my jewelry in them. They have all sorts of uses.
They are easy to use. Just fill up the container and snap the top on. I sometimes find it awkward to get the top to snap on but the tab makes it easier to open. I throw mine in the dishwasher and have never had them melt or distort from the heat. They also withstand the heat of cooking in the microwave very well. If I am using them for something hot, I throw them away after three or four uses as they start to look a bit dingy. If its my cookie container, it lasts longer.
Conclusion:
These containers are hardy and cheap. Nothing I have used them for has affected the plastic they are made of. I like the handles on the sides of Rubbermaid TakeAlongs as it helps prevent burning. The lids are a little difficult to snap on sometimes but they keep whatever is in them fresh without leaks or spillage. They withstand freezing, heating and washing in the microwave. They definitely accomplish the use they were made for.
