Also, the selection of items found in each
department could be called at least modestly better than the selection in a regular-sized
store.

Yes, that's true. Most departments seem to have a larger selection, although I can't remember enough about the old store to say whether that's because it's better spaced out, or they actually have different (rather than more) stuff.

I have extensively compared prices of many common grocery items found in both
SuperTarget and Hugo’s (literally compared...I wrote it down on paper and everything)
and found that SuperTarget was either almost exactly the same as Hugo’s (give or take a
few cents) or substantially lower. Donuts at fifty cents a piece? I bought one the other
night for $.39 (regular price...not on sale). I’ll grant you that the store is a tad high on
muffins, but could you even begin to compare the quality of the baked goods found at
Target with those from Super One???

It might just be a perception thing...I've never really done the old price comparison thing directly (and I almost never shop at Hugos, which I do consider to be overpriced.) The doughnuts have been reduced in price since the store opened (they were indeed 0.50 in May,) but I can buy six Norwegian sour creme donuts at Super One for $1.40, which would be $2.34 at Target, and I find the quality at Super One to be fine. Far better than Hugos, at any rate.

So “yes” Super Target does have “generic”
brands (two in fact).

An issue of semantics -- by "generic," I'm referring to the black and white no name products, which are generally really awful, but for some things, they're fine. The two brands that you cite are referred to as "off brands" in the review, and I still would like to see more of them offered.

That said, I will admit that I do 90% of my grocery shopping at Super Target now, and only stop in at Super One for things I can't get at the other store (my butter in tubs, still!, certain meats, etc.)

Also, my Mom came up here before Christmas and took a tour of the store and really liked it!

Thanks for the comments!

A few minor errors... (Reply to this comment)
by MatthewND
This is basically a pretty good review of our Super Target store here in Grand Forks, ND,
however there are a few problems with it that I must bring to attention.

**If we separate out the parts, the general merchandise store is pretty much what the old
one was.**

The departments in the general merchandise section are still the same departments that
you would find in any Target store, but didn’t you notice that they are sometimes TWICE
as big as the departments in the old store? Also, the selection of items found in each
department could be called at least modestly better than the selection in a regular-sized
store.

**The real downside of the store is the prices. For example, I like to have sweet rolls or
muffins around for Kiersten's breakfast on the weekends. A four pack of muffins is four
dollars. Donuts are fifty cents each. That makes me stop off at Super One on the way
home from Super Target, because a buck a muffin is a lot to pay.**

**There are very few "off brands" and no generics in the store, so you're stuck buying
brand name items at brand name prices for almost everything. I don't know where the
meat is coming from, but aside from dairy products, there are few (if any) of the local
products that I find in some of the other groceries.**

This is the statement that I just can’t seem to make heads or tails of. The entire concept
of the Archer Farms grocery store is a upscale supermarket which places its emphasis on
its own “in-store” brands (Archer Farms brand items and Market Pantry brand items). I
simply can’t understand how these two lines could be overlooked. These “in-store”
brands cover everything from beef jerky and corn flakes to their own fresh Ravioli and
their own balsamic vinegar salad dressing. So “yes” Super Target does have “generic”
brands (two in fact). I admit that I would like to see Super Target sell Dakota Growers
Pasta, but the store does sell some local products (for instance...lefse made right here in
the Red River Valley!).

I’m sure that your mother would have to agree with me when I say that Super Target is
even MORE wonderful than you say it is!

Sorry Lark, but you don't know Mom...she can pontificate on the wonders of Target and then b*tch about her GM (Guest Manager) for hours on end. You can't HELP but listen to her.

Thanks bro...now it's MY turn to make an appointment with my therapist...they moved the store? Is there nothing sacred in this world?

the hometown of Mr. Meijer...never realized some refer to the stores as "Fred Meijer's". Just plain ol' Meijer here. Used to call 'em "Thrifty Acres" in fact. Anyway...boy am I jealous. We just have your basic Target, although even there I can never make it out under $40.

Great review.
