Hockey-The Coolest Game On IceNov 04 '01 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line 60 minutes of exciting action Ice hockey is my favorite sport by far. Especially the NHL (National Hockey League). I have always been a hockey fan. The Saint Louis Blues to be exact. My Dad has taken me to games since I was a little girl. He would make the evening into a Father and Daughter date with dinner at the Spaghetti Factory in downtown Saint Louis. As I grew up I never lost my love of this fast moving , hard hitting, bone crunching sport. As a matter of fact the first conservation my husband and I had was about hockey and my then favorite player (Brendan Shanahan). I moved to Florida as a teenager and was deprived of a hockey team until the state was awarded an expansion team. The Tampa Bay Lightning was in their first year when my Dad my brothers and I drove from Orlando to their temporary arena. The first thing I realized was how little the new fans of their local team knew. Hockey is highly enjoyable but it helps to know the rules and terminology. For example the term hat trick does not mean to pull a rabbit out of a black top hat. A hat trick is when a player scores three goals in one game. Also icing does not mean to ice a cake. Icing is when a player shoots the puck from his side of center ice past the end red line. In hockey a player does not wear a jersey he wears a “sweater”. And a stinky pinkie is a glove to another player’s face usually resulting in a scuffle or a fight. Another way to help enjoy a good game is to be at least twenty-one and order a cold one. Budweiser is a favorite in this town with the famous brewery not too far away. No corny entertainment is needed in an experienced town. No cheerleaders or mascots are necessary. There is plenty of atmosphere to go around. The Music is great. The chants are done at just the right moment. There is enough chanting ridiculing to go around (although its not very nice its rather fun) A game consists of three 20-minute periods during which there is lots of exciting action. When a player from one team commits an infraction he is sent away to his detention center called the penalty box. This would leave the shamed player and his team a player short. Now the opposing team is on a power play. Very rarely there is a penalty so severe that the offending player is either sent off the ice for the rest of the game or the opposing team is awarded a penalty shot. A penalty shot is where the opposing team is allowed one player on the ice to take a shot at the goalie with no other defenders. The hard-hitting checks are also great. Hip checks usually send a player crashing into something like other players or the boards. Hockey is definitely my sport of choice. Learn it, love it, life it and you will soon learn that hockey is the coolest game on ice. Maybe some day you will bleed blue as the locals say. |
