Two Month Anniversary and Most of all Veteran's Day!
Nov 05 '01
The Bottom Line I think that we all should try and help out because we are all victims.
Next Monday November 11, 2001 will mark the 2 month anniversary of our National Tragedy. We want to continue to honor those that we lost, our military fighting, and our veterans.
As most of you are remembering the tragedy some of us are facing a bigger fear. I am a Navy wife. My husband is on shore duty but has been called to go overseas for 4 months. We are at a time in our lives were we thought we were free from being deployed. I guess we were wrong. My husband is needed there to help teach, assist, and train individuals who are not prepared to be there at this time.
Being a Navy wife it is very hard to let your hubby or significant other go during a time like this. They are basically going into the unknown. They may know where they are going or be able to tell you a specific but they don’t really know what is going to happen.
Its easier for most because they get a warning or a notice that their loved one is shipping out. Well, we got a 5 day notice. Time to plan for NOTHING! He is going to miss my birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas and several months out of the New Year. We don’t have a planned date of return. Nor do we have a time that he will be leaving. They just said be ready. When we call you have less than 12 hours. This is scary. We’ve been a military family for over 6 years and we’ve never had anything sprung up on us like this. Its shocking, stressful, and personally I am very overwhelmed.
I guess what I am trying to say is honor your Veterans, do something that you can for the New Yorkers that are mourning and wondering why me, for the post office workers (thank goodness they get a break from dreading touching the wrong piece of mail), don’t be impatient at the airports (think highly of this security we need it), because there is a lot more going on than we the people are hearing by the media.
There are still a lot of things we the people can do to help out:
Donate blood ~ American Red Cross is still in need of blood (although its become kind of distant). For the first few days or weeks even I drove passed donation stations on my way into town and they were packed but now they sit empty with a couple of cars.
If you are one of the many thousand that can’t donate then give a dollar or two to a relief fund.
Honor the Veterans and Military Members serving today
If you know one of these people give them a hug, cookies, visit them, tell them how honored you are for them serving for our country. If it weren’t for them we wouldn’t be able to fly our flags and have freedom as we do today.
I tell my husband all the time how proud I am of him, and I am very involved with his work in the military as much as I can be. I go to functions, help out with the spouses, and hopefully soon training to be an ombudsman for the command.
Around here in Florida you can donate magazines to the Naval hospitals, or volunteer at the VA Hospitals, clinics, etc. to help out!
This epinion is coming from the bottom of my heart because I am torn to pieces about my husband being taking away for the holidays. But although I know this is his job and he has to go it is still hard. He wants to go very badly, but is very sad about having to leave us during this time of the year.
Thank you to all the other Veterans and Military Families!!
