I have been a member of Ebay since 2000, I have watched the prices of listing things slowly continue to rise over the years as the sight itself continues to grow rapidly. If you want it or need it, youll more than likely find it there on Ebay. A few pointers that I feel people should know.
1. Watch the "shipping" and "handling" charges! Nothing stinks more than finding a $3.00 sew on patch you might want, and then reading the fine print and finding that the seller wants $6.00 shipping for the item, and it arrives at your door stuffed in an envelope with a .39 cent stamp on it. I have also seen some auctions lately where the item is like $5.00 and then they want $50.00 for shipping!
2. Read the sellers feedback closely! If there is a seller that has a lot of negative feedback, you might want to think twice about bidding on that item. First ask yourself, is it worth it to send the money and not get my item? Especially if the seller has a lot of negatives regarding items arriving broken, or not described acurately.
3. Watch for terms in the auction description such as "like new" or "barely used" Then read the sellers feedback! Do you see a lot of positive feedbacks from other buyers stating the item was better than described? If so, it might be an item you would want to bid on. See a lot of negatives? I would try and find the item from another seller.
4. DONT pay more than you want to spend just because you think you wont be able to find it again! It took me 2 months to get an item I was looking for, for the price I was willing to pay. I was looking for a HOG Owners group patch for 2005, one that I had lost. I dont know how many times I watched that patch go for $20.00 or more, then one day there it was... I won it for $5.00!
5. Revise your search for an item..... I am not saying this to be mean, so please dont take it that way... Sometimes typos occur and item descriptions get spelled wrong! Try different spellings for the item you are looking for, try common abbriviations, it might take a few extra moments, but think of the possibilities. You might find that missing beer "STEIN" listed under "BEER STEN" or even "BEER CUP" or "BEER GLASS", its always worth a few extra minutes to try other spellings.
6. Most importantly just have fun, and enjoy looking for things. After all you never know what you might find! Take a few precautions, watch hidden shipping charges and once again, have an idea on what the maximum you are willing to spend is.
