I hate cords. I can't wait for Wireless USB, but that's another review.
So when my rollerball mouse decided to gum up for the 90th time, I decided it was time to go optical and wireless in one fell swoop.
I had tried a few wireless mice, and just been unhappy. Either you had to click or hit it or jump 3 times in order to get it to "wake up." Sometimes the mouse would hit weird invisible speed bumps, slowing way down, then speeding up, completely randomly. Totally unacceptable for normal use.
So about a year ago I read about the new Laser mouse from Logitech. Rechargable, lots of features, and a nice ergonomic shell. Sounded good, so I went out and got it.
Inside was a power brick, a USB cable, the charger/base, and the mouse itself. Plugged the USB into the PC, the brick into the wall, and plopped the mouse in the cradle and waited the manufacturers recommended 24 hours to let the mouse charge.
24 hours later, I was rewarded with very fast tracking, no-click wake up -- just start using the mouse and everything works. A handy battery level indicator LEDs line the left side, telling you how much life you have left. I find I need to put the mouse in the charging cradle once every 2 weeks or so, and I work from home 8-10 hours a day, plus do some gaming on the weekend. Battery life is very nice.
The buttons have a nice click to them, and the scroll wheel also rolls with click of sorts -- not a free-rolling scroll wheel, but one with "divots" to allow you to scroll one "bit" or multiple bits at a time.
There is also a full page scroll buttons above and below the scroll wheel, and in addition the mouse has another button plus a scroll up/down buttons just above your thumb. I don't use them, but I could see their usefulness if you reprogrammed them for gaming or for other often used features of your OS.
I don't think I've had to re-register the mouse to the base since I installed it. It just plain always works, without question, for over a year now. I recommend this mouse to my friends and fellow geeks as often as mice come up in conversation (ok, not often). It's been a great tool and good value for the money. Who thought you'd ever spend $50-$70 for a mouse?!? It was worth it.
