| ak2525's Full Review: Creative Labs Nomad II (64MB) MP3 Player |
The Nomad II is a slick looking device. And sleek. It is about the size of a pack of cigarettes. The Nomad II introduces two major features that are quite new in the world of MP3 devices.
1. The in-built FM tuner, which stores 32 radio stations
2. Upgradeable firmware, via downloads off the Internet.
This cool device can support encrypted formats, so it will be compatible with the future concept of buying and downloading "locked" music files off the net. The upgradeable firmware also allows any newer music compression standards to be supported on the device. Few other MP3 devices can lay claim to such flexibility.
The Nomad also supports playback of uncompressed CD-quality sound, and can record up to 4 hours of recorded speech though its inbuilt mic. The Nomad II operates on a single AA type battery, which provides 8-10 hours of audio playback. The controls are nicely distributed across the length of the device, and it is flat enough to be comfortable to wear in-pocket.
The Nomad ships with the new Sony-style space-aged ear-hook headphones, which deliver really good bass, as well as a neat control panel mid-cable, with a handy clip for attachment to your clothing at a convenient position. It also has a belt clip and protective sleeve for transport. It has a storage space of 64MB ( you can store around 21 average MP3 songs or roughly 64 minutes of music). The flash memory card in the Nomad II is easily replaceable or swappable, so future upgrades to higher capacities or the purchase of a second card, to double your storage by swapping between the two is definitely possible.
The Nomad II connects through a USB connector to your computer, which provides very fast data transfer speed (a 3 minute song in 15 seconds). You can also store any kind of data on the Nomad II: such as text or exe files from your PC (use it to transfer files, etc.) The display of the Nomad II is a fairly simple backlit LCD. The bundled software includes the Creative Nomad II Manager, which handles all transfers to and from the unit.
Overall the Nomad II is a highly functional device with solid design where it matters most: in speed, storage and compatibility. It also looks very cool indeed.
