Id love to pretend Im a total prude and never shopped at an adult store, but lets be realistic. Im married and have a child. Obviously, somethings going on in the bedroom. Yes, once in a while Miss Top Reviewer in Kids and Family gets a little down and dirty and scrounges the Internet for some adult paraphernalia, because, good heavens, you know I wouldnt be caught dead in one of those stores! Anyone whos read any of my reviews knows I like to throw in a little sexual innuendo when I can. Well, throw innuendo out the window. This is the real deal. Beware: the review ahead contains items of a sexual nature.
THE BASICS
Adam and Eve is an online store that specializes in adult sexual paraphernalia. They sell vibrators, videos/DVDs, sex toys, lotions, lingerie (naughty schoolgirl costumes, corsets, and body jewelry to crotchless panties and mens wear), books, and novelties. They do not carry shoes. Its one-stop shopping for those promising experimental nights/weekend getaways.
NAVIGATION
From the homepage, there are several points of access to the site. There are many photos of items as well as links for sales. Its all a bit busy but not terribly hard to navigate. Running across the top, theres a category menu. Down the left-hand side a similar menu appears but with further breakdown. For instance, Naughty Novelties is subdivided into cologne, fun stuff, games, and more. Clicking on the Naughty Novelties link opens up a new window that includes the subdivisions as well as some others. On every page, there is also a Specials link that shows current sale items.
Once youve selected a category, the new window shows pictures of popular items. You can also shop by price from this level (under $9.99, $10-$19.99, $20-$49.99, $50-$99.99, $100 and up).
MY EXPERIENCE
Ive been pretty happy with my purchases on this site. Ive ordered some lingerie, some gadgets, and some lubricant. There are often freebies or specials for ordering. I think my original purchase was made because there was a deal for spending over $17. With the purchase, I got a DVD and some mini-sized lubricants. The DVD, like most of its genre, was disappointing but the samples have come in handy.
Adam & Eves prices are competitive and shipping has always been on time. I tried their overnight service once when my husband was due back after a shortened trip out to sea and it was prompt and everything arrived in order.
I think what first drew me to the site was the less than obvious name. It sounded so much more subtle than some of the raunchier online adult shops. Also, unlike some fly-by-night Web sites, this company has been around, in one form or another, for 35 years. The promise of discreet packaging on their home page enticed me as well. I dont need my neighborhood postal worker thinking me and my husband are sex fiends. And, indeed, the packaging has been discreet. I believe smaller purchases arrived in padded bubble-wrap bags and larger ones in plain, brown cardboard boxes. (Its been a while.)
Disappointingly, though, their sales mailings are not as discreet. Although nothing on the medium-sized white envelopes specifically shouts out sex, it does advertise free videos and sometimes parts of the catalog peek through the clear film over the mailing label. I have not tried to take myself off of their mailing list, so Im not sure how difficult it would be. I think they send me one catalog approximately every 6-8 weeks, though probably even less often than that.
The other thing that peeves me is that they send a lot of e-mails about specials, especially around holidays. Although its nice to hear about free shipping deals and unadvertised specials, receiving one or more e-mails a week is a bit much. At first, I thought it would be a hassle to unsubscribe from the e-mails and just deleted them as they arrived. But Ive since noticed that way down in the lower right hand corner, in very small, very faint type, theres a link to unsubscribe, which I just did today. Hopefully, it will take effect immediately.
The quality of the lingerie isnt spectacular. Its certainly no Victorias Secret, but there is a wide assortment to please most tastes. Id say its on par with a lot of items from Fredericks of Hollywood.
Some of the photos on the site are a bit revealing, though no pink bits are showing, but its pretty tame compared to other comparable sites Ive seen.
SHIPPING AND RETURNS
Just like many drugstore sites, Adam & Eve offers free standard shipping on orders over $49. They offer same day shipping and have a 90-day risk-free return policy. I havent had to ship anything back to them so I cant offer any personal stories. Given the nature of some of the items this site sells, Id imagine there are some restrictions on their risk-free return policy. But thats just a hunch.
OVERALL
Other than the frequent e-mails and slightly obvious catalog mailings, Im happy with this site. Ive probably ordered from it around three or four times over the past 10 years and have been satisfied with the quality of the merchandise, the prices, and the prompt service.
