Air wick FreshMatic Spray..Not as Noticeable as other air fresheners

Written: May 28 '06
Pros:Automatically sprays, timer
Cons:scent doesn't linger, can be expensive, can't spray on demand.
The Bottom Line: Great Idea but needs improvement.

I was at Safeway one day looking for some Febreze Noticeable refills when I noticed they had Air Wick Fresh Matic Sprays on sale plus there was a coupon on them for an immediate $4.00 off which brought it down to $4.99 a unit. For that price how could I not buy one and try it out.

~~Description

I believe the Air Wick Fresh Matic Spray is relatively new on the market. I haven’t seen any commercials recently for it and I do vaguely remember them but I am not for certain how long they have out. Any how..they are new to me and my nose.

The Fresh Matic is an automatic air freshener that is supposed to keep your room smelling nice throughout the day without any effort on your part. It enables you to choose from the different time settings so that your rooms stay smelling as fresh as you choose. The starter kit I picked up came with the Air Wick Fresh Matic Spray plus a full can of Sparkling Citrus spray.

The unit itself is white and measures about 9 inches tall and the width and depth are about 3.75 inches. To open you press down (extremely hard) on the button located at the top of the unit. The front cover will then open up and this where you insert the 2 AA batteries (included) and this where the spray can also goes. When inserting the can please make sure the nozzle is facing outwards or the unit will not work. Once you have inserted it properly there is a little timer/power switch to the side of it. This is where you can set it for either 9, 18 or 36 minute sprays. When you have it set, close the unit and immediately turn away from your face because there is a 15 second delay for the first spray. If you are wondering if the unit works you should see a green blinking light. This lets you know your batteries are still good. Don’t do like me and look for that green light before the first spray..I was lucky enough to turn it just before it went off.

Placement for the Air Wick Fresh Matic Spray can either be standing alone or it does come with a screw and anchor so that you can attach to a wall. You just want to make sure that the spray isn’t next to any materials or curtains or directly above any furniture that may get damaged with overspray.

Refills run about $4.99 a can and on a 9 minute setting replacement runs about every 15 days and on 18 minute setting your looking at 30 days and the 36 minute setting needs to be changed every 60 days. Batteries usually last about 3-4 refills.

~~Our time with the Freshmatic

For test purposes I put this up on a wall in our family room, which is the room we use 85% of the time. I have it set to spray every 36 minutes and so far I have to say that I not to impressed.

For one, the citrus smell just stinks to me. It makes my family room smell like a bathroom. I also noticed that the unit makes what sounds like a wet fart when it releases a spray. My cat even jumped when she heard the first few sprays. The scent from the spray comes out strong but disappears in a couple minutes and the room is back to normal so those who want a lasting smell probably shouldn’t use the 36 minute setting.

After the first week, I moved this into the bathroom where the scent fits more appropriately and a blast every 36 minutes in there.. does more good than in here.
A quick note to those who do use this in the bathroom, you may still want to keep a regular aerosol can for the emergency sprays since this does not have a button to spray on demand.

I can’t say that I will be willing to buy any more refills when I run out of the two other cans I have. I am not to impressed with them and think there are much better air fresheners available. I think for those who want a lasting scent in a room the Febreze Noticeables do a much better job.
