Buy What You Need

The Bottom Line I highly recommend the Gateway 700x. It is a power packed PC with a very affordable price tag. The customer care is fantastic!
One of the biggest mistakes made when buying a PC, is not stopping to think about what you really need in a computer. If you basically just do e-mail, and play a few games, most low range PC's will fill the bill.
But, if like me, you write or design for a living, picking the right system is crucial. For the last 2 years I've been working with a 466 mz computer, with little storage and very little RAM- 64 megs to be exact. With the huge graphics storage I require, there was no room on this system, so it locked up repeatedly. Plus with such a small processor, writing 5-10 articles per week was slow going.
High speed gamers and dedicated photography buffs both require big storage capacity and matching RAM. I finally purchased a new system last week, after searching for an under $2,000.00 system.
I bought the Gateway 700x. With a blazing fast 1.8Gz processor, 252 RAM and 80 megs of storage, I have the system I need. It uses the Windows XP platform, which I find seamless and intuitive. A huge improvement on anything they've done to date. The cost was $1499 at that time, it has since gone to $1799, still a very well-priced system. I bought online, directly from Gateway. The salesperson answered all my questions and helped me choose the best system for my needs.
Whether you buy in store or online, take the time to frankly discuss what you intend to use your system for, now and in the foreseeable future. A family use PC should have a large processor and at least 40 Gz of hard drive, for family photos, games and educational software.
An ethernet card is a must for cable hookup, a digital camera outlet and CD/ReWrite/DVD. With this most families can do the things that matter most: communicate with each other, learn and play games.
The model I bought came with Adobe 5.0, Microsoft Photo Shop and Publishing Suite, in addition to the usual range of Windows programs. The CD/Rewrite allows me to store multiple articles and newsletters safely.
It also came with Music Match, Windows Media Player, and a home video suite of software. Very very impressive.
Taking time to assess what you really need and want in your home PC can save you time, frustration and money.
