The Bottom Line I recommend the emachine as a pc for the beginner or elderly.

Great for the GrandmaCheap is right! You can buy the 333Mhz emachine for under $300. But youll have freezups if you try to do anything on it.

There's no Intel inside my system, and with a 333 MHz AMD CPU, and it does the job fine. It comes with Windows 98 and that horrible, horrible Microsoft Works suite, so the software that came built in was minimal. So if all you do is word processing, or use the internet for minimal use, like geaneology, then this is your buy. It is the cheapest buy out there. Compare to Dell prices to see what I mean!

great for the beginner
The emachines T1801 comes with 800Mhz and 128MB RAM, CD ROM, 20 gig HD, and your basic 56k modem. This works. And you can get it for $500 at Costco or marbe even cheaper online. For a first computer, unless you have tons of music and games, you will never need to upgrade for the life of the computer (2-3yrs). But you will get frustrated if you like to multi-task (use games, internet, word, etc. all at once...it will crash)

Personally, I like to use a 280 GB Hard Drive with a PentiumIV 1024Mhz processor and atleast 533 MB Dims. But that is a fast computer with high cost for the beginner.
