Mars Volta...blah. They were on right before the Stooges in Long Beach, admittedly a difficult spot, but I was tired of them after 15 minutes. They have a lot of energy, but what they're going on about, I don't know.

Oooh, this is interesting. Since The Volta is now touring with the peppers, I was wondering how they would be received by CP fans. This isn't the first time someone contacted me to tell me they saw MV and didn't like them, but it's the first time since they connected with the chilli peppers.

As for their songs, I don't know what the new stuff is like. At the time I saw them, they still had Eva on Bass. Eva left when her father died and was replaced by somebody (forget who) who couldn't cut it. I understand Flea is their new bassist? I should check on that. Anyway, I've only heard the Tremulent EP, and I think every song on that is pretty rad. Hey, there's no accounting for taste and you and I probably just differ in ours.

Peace. ~Ryan

Recently i saw a show with mars volta, and was less than impressed, the fans in the crowd booed them off the stage. It was in Zurich Switzerland, and the band started off with a wisecrack about how over priced everything was in switzerland. Then they proceeded to dance around insanely like speed addicts, and played overloud sythensized music, that was painful to hear. I could have been influenced by the main show being the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but nobody in the crowd was pleased with this show, and i don't know what the hype is about. Could you please tell me the names of some of Mars volta's "good" songs?

I updated this review today to reflect ATDI's split into Sparta as well, and I added a few hyperlinks. I left the bulk of the piece exactly as I originally wrote it back in 2001.

Take care all, and thanks for reading this thing. Since Mars Volta added this review to their website, I've been contacted almost weekly by people who read this and just wanted to say "HI". I appreciate it, and I've seen the hits on this review climb above anything else I've ever written. 10,600 last time I checked!

Thanks again everyone. Peace. ~Ryan

More evidence of my complete incompetence (Reply to this comment)

A recent email I got concerning the Mars Volta/ At The Drive-In side projects. Thanks Arashi! ~Ryan
----------

Hey my name is Luis and I loved your Mars Volta / Anniversary review... I went to the show myself down here in Miami the bassist's father died so they cancelled, I was extremely disappointed... I just wanted to say that At The Drive-In split into Mars Volta and Sparta, not MV and De Facto like your review says. De Facto is a side project that Omar, Cedric, and two other Mars Volta members have been in for years and is still a side project from Mars Volta. The other three members of ATD-I went into Sparta, another great band in my opinion.

Some sites to verify this:

Correction (Reply to this comment)

I've been meaning to leave this comment for some time...

Shortly after posting this review, Siouxsie corrected me on something in my piece. Then, just now, I got an IM from a stranger who offered the same correction. In the words of my mystery IMer:

Hi, I was reading your e-opinon on the Mars Volta show that you went to; At the Drive-In actually divided up into three bands: cedric and Omar in Defacto and The Mars Volta, and then there's Sparta, which consists of Jim, Paul and Tony

So there you have it. Thanks everyone for keeping me informed and reminding me how stupid I really am! ~Ryan

MOS is one of my favorite bands EVER. I know that's a risky comment to make about a band that's only released one full length and a couple 7"s, but they are so incredibly amazing and nice. When I was living in berkeley, this girl I often saw at shows and I read on their site that they were going to be playing for a friend's bday, so she wrote to find out if this was going to be at a public place where we could attend and what not. Well, turned out the place was in a weird wherehouse/shed thing in oakland, but the partyperson had told them they could bring whoever they wanted, so they extended the invitation to us. It was so cool of them. They'd best get their butts to europe soon.

Wow. Thank you so much. I'm ultra-flattered.

It's funny... when I saw you left an MH, I was impressed anyway because I always feel like I have to really earn my ratings from you. Like you do a really fair job of rating reviews. I respect your ratings more so than most reviewers. So this means alot to me.

I'm pretty stingy on MH's myself. I don't like leaving them very often. If I feel the urge to leave one, I'll usually go and read all the other VH reviews in that category to make sure. Assuming there isn't 300 reviews to read!

Well, thanks so much. ~Ryan

Typos don't matter...This is one of the best concert reviews I've read in a long time and therefore gets the very first MH I have ever given out. :-)

I'm noticing some typos and errors now that I'm re-reading this piece. I'm going to fix it later, once I've slept.

Good night all! ~Ryan
