PROVIDIAN, may you burn in hell!!!

The Bottom Line Don't go there!

I was so proud of getting a credit card. And for two years Providian certainly was happy to have our household as a customer. We started out with a small limit, but by paying it off every month, soon the credit limits were increased. Our credit rating was great, and I was still paying double the minimum payment every month.

But then our first child started school. The bedlam began...money for this, money for that....NOW. Your child cannot partake here or there unless you cough up the money before hand. Please update your child's shots....pediatrician wants the bill paid in full (not that much, really with three kids but just enough to put me in the hole for a couple of months on everything else). So, I put the credit card payment on hold til the next month. BIG MISTAKE WITH PROVIDIAN!!!!!! The credit card police began their harrassing phone calls and were not willing to settle for a partial payment. Negotiating wasn't that simple either. After coming to an agreement and overnighting my payment to them (at an extra $13 mind you) they accepted and signed for the money and closed the account without any discussion.! So, all in all after 2 years of absolutely no late payments, monthly bills paid off in full, and way more than minimum monthly payments, after calling them to work out the temporary situation of being late 59 days I went into what I call Providian HELL! Not only did they go back on their word that once they received the overnight payment the card would still be in good standing and I then could remain on track, but they wanted the card back and wanted more and more money.

Now, I know it is not right to ignore those phone calls and letters, but on the verge of a nervous breakdown, I did. The card was no longer valid, and although I did send less than the monthly amount to try to pay it off, they kept charging the interest, late fees and the over the limit charges to the tune of $1500! The hole had turned into the grand canyon. Providian then turns the account to a collection agency that is Satan's right hand man. I try to get an agreed amount to send them, but then they refuse to give me a mailing address to pay them. All the while all of the charges are adding to my total. Instead of trying to get me out of the hole, they are getting me in deeper so that I die and rot there!

The collection agency asks me to wite a postdated check (NOT) and when they get my money order in the mail they will send the check back. But they won't give me an address to send it to, only debit withdrawal. I think not. After about two hours on the phone with both of them I finally came to an agreement, asked for it in writing, and am still awaiting confirmation in the mail. We will see. Oh, and finally after a few choice words ( which were recorded) I finally received the mailing address I needed. The bill will be paid in full.

All in all, stay away from Providian. I found out so much later that they are a high risk card company (with our excellent credit rating b/4 this card I have no idea why they sent us the card) that has a terrible reputation for this kind of action. If I ever get another credit card (doubtful) I will stay clear of them and any of their sister companies as well. You should stay clear, too.
