The next phase

The Bottom Line

Life after college will be a lot like life during college, only there's going to be a lot of effort in between. Where will you live? Where will you work? It's not always that easy.

Grad School

You can always take a few more years off of reality by going to grad school. On the other hand, you may be so fed up with school that you'll run from your graduation screaming. Grad school may be a necessity for some professions. Look into it only if you're serious. Most schools charge triple the undergrad rate.

Work

Many students have a job lined up before they graduate. Not everyone is so lucky. As an English major, I am having a hard time finding a job within that field. (I still wonder why people ask if I want to be a teacher. There's nothing wrong with that field; it's just that I didn't major in it.)

Most schools have a career center with people that can help you. Use this. People send jobs to these places with college students and graduates in mind. Job hotlines and classifieds are great, but they're usually not that specific. I can also say the same thing about Internet job sites. That's not to say you shouldn't use them. It's just that you need to work from the top down.

Someone mentioned AmeriCorps in their editorial on this topic. I did that and I highly recommend it. For those not in the know, it's a domestic version of the Peace Corps. At least that's how everyone explains it. It's almost like going to college except you work instead of study. If you enter one of the residential programs, you'll even get a roommate. (As soon as I find the Web site, I'll leave it in the comment section.)

Housing

Some students move back in with their parents, never left, or have already moved into a place they want to keep. If you live in the dorms, plan ahead. Finding an apartment is usually very quick, but paperwork can be a headache and I don't even know what's involved in finding a house, but to make sure there's no interruption in your housing situation, plan on finding a place a week or two in advance.

Social life

The majority of a student's social life comes from within the campus. Once removed from that environment, you'll have to find new ways of meeting people. Usually, this means meeting people at work or in the gym or grocery store. There are thousands of different ways and everyone seems to have their favorite. I'll admit that I'm still trying to figure it out.

You'll definitely have a lot of extra time on your hands, at least until you get a job. Even then, all of the studying is cut out so you'll have to find new things to do. Just remember: You're adult now. (I'm still trying to figure that one out, too.)
