The Bottom Line The majority of receivers deliver sound that most people would consider good. If a general consumer, decide by features, connectivity, and power. If you're a enthusiast, listen.
The second most important member of your home theater setup is the receiver. It is the power and sound source for everything in your system. Here is a quick rundown of some receiver brands ranked in tiers by overall sound and build quality, tiers are in order, but brands within each tier are in no particular order. Notes are included where applicable.
Tier 1-entry level
1.KLH-Yes, they make receivers now.
2.TEAC-Very good value and nice sound quality.
3Aiwa-Have power ratings that are said to be misleading.
4.Panasonic-Similar to their Technics line but less expensive.
Tier 2-Mid-grade
1.Kenwood
2.Sony-Lots of buttons and options, sound quality decent but not particularly good.
3.Technics-Good technology for a reasonable price, highly rated.
4.Pioneer-Tend to offer the newest features at the lowest cost.
5.JVC-From what I've seen, JVC receivers aren't that great
Tier 3-High end of consumer-oriented audio
1.Onkyo
2.Yamaha-Characterized by excellent DSP and bright sound.
3.Harman Kardon-Reliability problems in the past but seem to be getting better. Warm, accurate sound.
Tier 4-Enthusiast level
1.Marantz-Great stuff. Warm, high current sound and new models have very reasonable prices.
2.Denon- Big, thick receivers with excellent sound.
Tier 5-Audiophile
1.McIntosh-Very highly rated
2.NAD
3.Rotel
