The Bottom Line This is a very good white table wine, light to medium in body and well- balanced in taste.
White wines have great versatility. They can be paired with food, or just sipped on as an after dinner drink and they are often lighter and easier to drink than their full- bodied counterparts. The wine I’m going to review today is a product of the Santa Barbara Coast Wine Specialists, located in Santa Monica, California. The wine is called Sylvestre Semillon, a vintage 2000 wine. Basic Characteristics of This Wine: This wine gets its grapes from the Edna Valley in San Luis Obispo County, located in the South Central California viticultural area. The winemakers ferment this wine by dividing the fermentation period between barrels and stainless steel. Because of this, the wine doesn’t have quite the woody flavor that is typical of many other white wines that spend their entire fermentation cycle in wooden barrels. This wine is light to medium in body. Poured into a small glass, there is almost no color at all. It almost looks clear, but for a hint of yellow from the grape. The aroma is both flowery and fruity. Tasting this wine yields a few pleasant surprises. The taste is well- balanced between sweet and dry, with the flavor of citrus, and a hint of fig and pepper. It finishes crisp, but not overtly dry. The initial sweetness provides a good balance. I found that this wine became even smoother and more easy- drinking the more I tasted. I started out with a chilled glass, straight from the refrigerator, so it was around 40 degrees. As it warmed up just a tad, it was still very drinkable and good tasting. In some respects, it was actually a little bit better after it warmed up to, say, 50 degrees or so. The alcoholic strength of this wine is 12.8 percent by volume, and the flavor of alcohol is obvious, like with most wines. But the balanced taste makes the wine enjoyable. Food Compatibility: I recommend drinking this wine with foods such as seasoned chicken, turkey, salads, seafood, and sharp cheeses. It’s also good to drink as a sipping wine after a meal. Final Thoughts: I don’t consume very much wine, but when I do decide to imbibe a little, I usually like my white wine to be more easy- drinking than complex. This wine fits the bill perfectly. It has just enough complexity to make you want to try some more, along with the simplicity and smoothness that makes it easy to drink. This is a vintage 2000 wine, but there’s no need to age it any further. Aging could improve the taste a little bit, but I think it’s very good to drink right now. I like this wine, and I recommend giving it a try, if you happen to stumble across some. It sells for about $7.50 per 750 ml bottle. I rate this wine 4 stars out of 5. It’s a very good, well- balanced wine that’s suitable for many occasions. |
